Yes, non / late payment is very stressful. I have had various problems over the years but adding the following T+C's below has greatly reduced the problem.

Upon completion of the fieldwork and post excavation reporting and analysis a draft report will be issued to the client / agent/ local authority. A final report will be issued for planning purposes once payment has been settled

???? will retain copyright of reports produced on behalf of the client until payment has been received

The draft report is stamped 'CLIENT DRAFT NOT FOR PLANNING' in bold red at the bottom of every page as well. In addition to this i always call / email the curator and planners to let them know how my system works. This has caught quite a few wanna-be con merchants out.

In the past i have nearly resorted to extreme measures including a car full of lads driving up north to walk someone to a cashpoint...its not the answer. In the rush to win a job its very easy to rush the quotation, half a page of A4's worth of T+C's isn't onerous.

I mean that in the olden days when archaeologists worked for the government when they produced reports the copyright belonged to the government and the subsequently the public. What the archaeologists got for this was a salary but that when they made the archaeologists become commercial the concept seems to be that the copyright of the archaeology had to be given to the government and the public and so now they like to put these reports in HERs and charge people to look at the HER.
