Kajemby - consider how you reps (any union) could/should help you...i think a first step is for a solid mass of specifc/re-occuring complaints to gather, from differnt origins, and in different organisations...

i have (in a supervisory capacity) asked people to work in somewhat unfavourable conditions, hoping that, by enthusiasm and leading from the front, i could get tehm to assist me in 'extreeme excavation'...i like to think that i have never at the same time been a B****** over breaks/timekeeping > generaly i thought that there was at least something worth doing well on any 'site' - and, that by persuing a 'pure' connection/engagement with the materail. as it revealed itself, something positive must result...
(Perhapes nievley) i thought that i could persuade others to this view, and that in the end a sincere approach to the material reamins counted for a lot - perhapes more than usually creditited......anyway- point is, i never asked anybody to do anything that i was not also going to do myself there and then (eg the Servant-Leader of Greenleaf)...
However i have also seen consequences of a huge ammount of dimwittery, baffooning ignorant nonsense, and dangerous short-sightedness...(i am almost certain that i did not ceate it all), not to mention Thieveing Kites and Obdurate Asses of the finest breeds, who have really spoiled some part of the experience, and, the material evidence aswell...mainly, they seem to have held positions above me. ..Personally i would like some people to really think about what they are doing and why, otherwise shipout....
Problem was many of these things were not 'signifcant' issues in-themselves (although some clearly were) ... becomes only a minor issue between an individual and and an employer...exploited in law, or at tribunal, at disproportionate personal difficulty and expense.
i have always known that union organisations can only represent thier members, and as such, can not always be see as the source for all change. At times this must come from a clear and determined workforce, whoes rights will be defeneded by the Law and Various Facilities of the unions Combined.
I have been a liitle disappointed at the uptake at membership - and i am glad union organisations have acted faithfully on many occasions hourabley in employer-emlployee disputes, and have done a lot to improve some commercial attitudes towards some aspects of conditions...it seems to me that archaeologists can be surprissingly bad at thinking beyond the imediate team/site,( through reguarly breaking up teams does a lot limit effective cohesion!)
We need to Harmonise the differnt organisations ...so that principles Commonly agreed, can be effectivley Enacted for the mutual benifit of All.

You know what the best thing I ever heard was?
While working for a unit which docked our weekly pay by ?75 for the pleasure of staying in accomadation, I heard a brand new archaeologist say "Isn't it nice of them [the unit] to find us somewhere to live!"
We're all doomed.

hopefully motivated to action...but if we are doomed, what have we got to lose in the attempt?

Is it just me or is there something rather Pythonesque about this whole thread? Thing is I can't work out which sketch it most resembles. The 3 Yorkshiremen or the Argument...?
Either way I hope you're all having fun tearing chunks out of each other. Very constructive. :face-approve:

that said, in my experience and with very few exceptions (in the cold light of day), when I've been beaten up I 've usually asked for / deserved it. Not sure why you would be any different on the evidence presented Grindlecat.
