Hello Marcus, just wanted to let you know that Raksha is currently employed by MoLA as a field archaeologist, and has spent a long, cold winter on various sites around London. She's been posting pictures on Twitter of various interesting things she's found, and will continue doing so, I'm sure! She will be shooting the next season of Time Team, however, which will mean she will have to adjust her schedule.

I happily stand corrected.

If you think you're tough enough, why don't you come along and spend a day in her trench at Flag Fen? :-)

I have to admit that my holiday destinations these days are based more on the availability of a bit of sun and somewhere to have a nice sit down. If there are a few ruins available, I might totter along to have a quick look, but the idea of paying for a busman's holiday is no longer a huge draw, I'm afraid. As I said, however, I wish Dig Ventures all the best.

So can we assume that you'll be signing up, Unit, to give the assembled volunteers the benefit of your vast experience? Unfortunately, ?125 per day is too rich for my blood, but presumably it'd be a mere drop in the ocean to someone of your resources!

As it is a Social Enterprise
one expects it to be a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners. It is also working with Vivacity, an independent, not-for-profit organisation with charitable status that manages many of Peterborough’s most popular culture and leisure facilities on behalf of Peterborough City Council (http://www.vivacity-peterborough.com/mus...e/flag-fen).

As a matter of interest... is providing work and creating profit a bad thing? Most of the negative comments I have seen across the web are 125 quid... I am not paying that... not fair, what about the students etc...

If I asked you to contribute to say... A Palestinian archaeology project OR a Georgian Museum the rattle of coinage would come in... with no return/reward.

In this case you can actually get something for your contribution. and archaeology gets done. good archaeology that needs to be done. and people get work and people get something for their contribution. When you contributed to the Palestinian project, did you complain that you were excluded? :face-huh:

Just a thought. This is a new way - and so will attract critique - which if positive will be good and helpful.

it would be very interesting to see how much 'profit' is ploughed back into the venture and not taken as a wage by the 'senior management' of this project. I see there are more negative comments than positive throughout this thread and it is somewhat understandable seeing as most archaeologists may view this as a cynical money spinner, Digventures are good at self promoting even when they are trying to respond to serious questions posted here. I get the feeling from their website that your ?125 per day (this season??) will gain you access to a few test pits and trial trenches - hardly an amazing archaeological experience on a world famous wetland site, perhaps this is offset by the after work lectures and dinner before you retire to your tent?

I really don't want to be negative either however i just feel that this does not have the sites best interest at heart - it all has the feel of 'spin' about it....

As ever BAJR, bang on the money. We are as transparent as it is possible to be in this - and need to be: crowd funding is based on trust. Our social objectives are clearly articulated, our income visible for all to see (in real time), our deliverables clearly explained, our funders listed by name. Our accounts will also be published at companies house in good time. There are few other businesses/charities in our sector that I can think of whose inner workings are laid so visible for all to see.
