Yes, always difficult to explain 'value' in archaeology. That said, every feature has its price. That pit that took 3 days to excavate...Mr Developer has to pay for the d.b.a., negotiation time, site clearance, excavation, recording, post-excavation analysis, materials, curation of its material, paper, photographic and digital archive. We tax-payers chip in with the latter too. All in all, probably talking four figure sums. It might be prostitution but it still costs

Snipey-you can usually tell us veterans of that site easily-we still shake uncontrollably,refuse to believe what we`re told until we see it in the risk assessment/method statement/project design and more importantly-shout" **** off " a lot in the face of crass idiocy....

Hmm. In similar situations, I was known to shout "you're fired" instead. }

Surely you should say "I find your lack of faith disturbing" and then choke the unruly digger using the dark side of the force?

For clarity-the site in question was a perfect example of the incompetence, lack of professionalism and abject muppetry that us site assistants have to put up with on a painfully regular basis. As such, My colleagues and I were in no position to sack anyone. Diggers-unruly or otherwise do the job for a living-it`s hard enough as it is without office archaeologists pretending they know what they`re doing,endangering the lives of fieldies and expecting polite responses in return.
The concepts of field excavation should be taught to consultants through force

Surely one of the great questions is 'So which university do you work for', usually whilst standing in the rain watching a pipe trench being excavated through 20th century hardcore to a new single storey conservatory. A bemused expression follows when you explain that there is no way you would be doing this if you weren't getting paid.

got asked yesterday "so how far down are you then?" Didn't quite know how to answer, though the sensible reply would have been to point at what I was standing on and say "this far"...
