Many thanx for the heads-up 27! Methinks perhaps a BAJR statement may be in order once the agenda for the inquiry is known.A united stance?

I have a copy of the agenda. Although the list doesn't specifically include "should archaeologists get more cash and better job security" as an issue to be considered. We do fit in to several of the topics they do raise for discussion. If you would like the full list i can provide.
I also think a combined BAJR statement would be a very good idea. Although whether we could all agree as to what goes into it is another matter

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee is announcing today a new inquiry into the heritage sector.
The Committee is particularly interested in receiving evidence on the following issues:
1? What the Department for Culture, Media and Sport should identify as priorities in the forthcoming Heritage White Paper;
2? The remit and effectiveness of DCMS, English Heritage and other relevant organisations in representing heritage interests inside and outside Government;
3? The balance between heritage and development needs in planning policy;
4? Access to heritage and the position of heritage as a cultural asset in the community;
5? Funding, with particular reference to the adequacy of the budget for English Heritage and for museums and galleries, the impact of the London 2012 Olympics on Lottery funding for heritage projects, and forthcoming decisions on the sharing of funds from Lottery sources between good causes;
6? What the roles and responsibilities should be for English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund, local authorities, museums and galleries, charitable and other non-Governmental organisations in maintaining the nation?s heritage; and
7? Whether there is an adequate supply of professionals with conservation skills; the priority placed by planning authorities on conservation; and means of making conservation expertise more accessible to planning officers, councillors and the general public.
So there we go.... can we keep to the convention of comments preceded by the number. that will keep it easy to collate.
A kind of Wiki Consultation

Numbered as requested.
3. There has to be some way for planning officials to be made to listen when EH say a site is nationally important (maybe a definition of nationally important needs to be given).
4. Heritage is a vital asset to the community and, although there are constraints on its use, should be accessible where the site allows.
5. It seems EH needs more funding as do museums etc. A lot of heritage is only conserved with the assistance of Lottery funding so this should be a priority. The Olympics will bring large amounts of revenue to the areas holding the events so there should be as much private funding of it from these areas as possible, remind them of partnerships.
6. I thought EH's role was protector of heritage why should that change. Local authorities are also charged with protecting heritage for the community so that should be enforced in some way.
7. You have the answer as to the number of professionals with conservation skills but to my mind you can never have too many. Conservation should play an important part in planning decisions. There probably needs to be more education of conservation given to the whole community but especially planning authorities, this will make more people aware of conservation needs.
How's that for starters?

Does this mean everyone agrees with me and can think of no other points to pass on? Surely I don't speak for all of you. [:0]
My interest lies in heritage tourism which I see as a way of keeping more of our heritage for you guys to work on whilst at the same time bringing revenue to the country and a pride in our past to the people. I had no interest in history at school but now I'm learning more about pre-history and see its importance to knowing where we came from. I want to be able to spread this message to everyone, for this I need the archaeology to tell the story. Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and one of the biggest moneymakers for this country. With your help we could bring the past to life and use it to spread employment to both archaeologists and the local communities.
