Top up fees and future archaeology grads

Unless you desperately want to specialise in osteo or other very archaeology specific MA/MSc and also have a burning desire to become an academic, I would think long and hard before spending your money. Also consider the number of people these courses pump out every year and the limited number of jobs for them.

You'll have a first degree in archaeology so why not look at other disciplines for a masters eg. surveying, photogrammetry, GIS etc.

Practical skills, more employable in archaeology (maybe) and, if needed, a get out as well.

Can an archaeologist dig out a career in surveying?

I have a degree in ancient history and archaeology and experience as a archaeological site assistant. But as I really enjoy the surveying, I'm considering a career in this aspect. Do I need to do another degree and if so is there any financial help available?

It sounds as though your degree and subsequent work have included surveying elements, so you may be able to do a masters conversion course - which is much faster and cheaper than doing another degree. Some courses can be done part-time and combined with work.

The smart solution is to get a job where you would be given time off to do this training and have your fees paid. Use the course search facility on the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors site (http://www.rics.org.uk).

I seem to remember that it is the later and was an attempt by the government to address the issue that some unis didn't (or think they didn't) get enough money through the previous system. I can't see many unis bothering with the system if they were going to get the money anyway from the government.

The question is I think, why does the country as a whole need us to churn out Archaeology graduates at such an alarming rate?
Where are they all going to work?
Now, I fully understand that it is everyones right to study what they want, and to work in whatever area they want to as well, but do we really need all these archaeologists?

The answer to that depends on what proportion of archaeology students have any intention of pursuing a career in archaeology. Not necessarily a majority!
