Do not fear BAJRs here....

You will be glad to know that part of the big BAJR expansion (too many pies!!) my wife is taking on the Education (THERA section) and also the CVs online. With someone working on it permenantly it means that up to date will actually mean that! and knowing where people are, what they want to do.... what they can do and when they are available will be all part of the service... a service I hasten to add that will cost nought!! oh yes you heard it hear... for at least the first year of this (until we truely find out the workload) it will provide realtime info on who is available .... great minds think alike.!

When you say this are you talking about professions meaning professionals? I've had a lot of experience of non-professional temp work and it was NEVER out of preference over more secure work. And yes it is another tier taking their cut. My experience is that they take about 30-40% of the hourly wage. In effect temping wages are LOWER than equivalent secure positions, and with none of the benefits.

Now I understand agencies for teachers and nurses may be different, and the hourly wage is HIGHER. But as archaeology seems to have problems regarding itself as a profession I can see no reason why we would get [u]agency </u>pay levels rather than [u]temp </u>pay levels.

Does anyone remember a few years am attempt to setup an archaeological job agency? Advertised a couple of times in the guardian.. died a very silent death.

An agency in principle seems a very good idea, but it is doubtful whether it would ever work.. Lets face it archaeological companies are so tight there is no way they would pay the agency rates when they can cheap, casual labour with little or no committment..

Doesn't archaeology in the Netherlands depend on job agencies?

Merc, yes I was referring to "professionals" as opposed to "manual" occupations, of which I admit I know nothing of the agency conditions. I was rather hoping that archaeology counted as a profession! But certainly professional contract workers get much higher hourly rates than perm staff, that's why they do it. I did it myself for a spell. I don't want to teach anyone to suck eggs but bear in mind that the costs of an employee, to an employer, are considerably more than the wages paid. There is also the problem of the complex raft of employment legislation, which is a problem for small firms depending on relatively short term contracts.

BAJR, the jobby section, does a superb job as we are all aware, but it is not an agency. It is in effect a notice board for employers and employees. It enters in no contract with anyone and thus fulfils a valuable but different role.

Are there any figures for how many employees, i.e. CV posters, have been contacted and/or engaged by potential employers? Have any of you guys had a success from a BAJR CV? (I do have a vested interest in finding out if it works.....)

We discussed the issue of an agency to supply archaeologists, in the main we were wondering if it was a way to increase pay rates (Supply and demand).

Know of one bod who got a superviz job through having CV on BAJR

In the olden days i tried to get a couple of people from the CVs online and even then the majority were vastly out of date.
