We're trying to come up with a definition of a "phase".
So far, we're going with a phase being roughly the period of construction, use and abandonment of a feature/set of associated features/etc.
Does anyone have any other definition of a phase?

try this

A phase is something you go through but will grow out of eventually.
Probably applies equally to posthole structures, kilns, stone circles and teenagers.

Yep, got that manual already, but thanks. Hoping to out-grow this phase soon as we decide what it is!

Thewre is a definition of stratigraphic phasing in Harris 1979 'Principles of archaeological stratigraphy'p.158 and a discussion of gropuping stratigraphy in Roskams 2001 ' Excavation'pp257-261. There are of course the numerous useful papers resulting from the stratigraphy conference papers. Ceramic periods/ phasing is discussed in Monaghan 1997 ' Roman pottery from York' p 860,

Oooh! Principles of Archaeological Stratigraphy! I remember owning a copy of that about 8 years ago. Until Monitor Lizard "borrowed" it... [xx(]

Come on ML, give Curator Kid his book back! He's only young, and can't afford to go buying replacement hefty tomes like this out of his pocket-money....
