I was clearly being a bit obscure. My point was that if you can put together a decent case for why you need money to do good research, then you might get the money. If you can't do that, you're doomed to do boring, under-resourced projects.

Do they look after their staff properly?
Do they ever ask you to do something dodgy?
Do they pay you all the same, or do the special few get looked after while the rest of you suffer?
