I was just wondering if many archaeologist out there have realised that they are entitled to 'Working Tax Credit'?
I am on c.£16,000 pa and have been on tax credit for 6 months, it comes in very handy; I get just under £200 a month, just for being on a low wage, and working more than 30 hours a week. It helps with the bills (like most; more going out than coming in)
I have told quite a few people about working tax credit and to date non of them have applied for it, yet all of them mown about there low wage, yet they appear to be able to turn there nose's up at the prospect of a couple of hundred pound from the benefits agency!
Just thought there may be many archaeologist unaware of this avalible benifit to them!

Hmmm, useful information, thank you! Do you have dependants (eg, children), Soils? It seems, from the Inland Rev. site, that what you are entitled to relies on several factors, such as whether or not you are single or in a relationship ('living as married'!) and whether or not you have children/dependants. A single person with no children, earning £10,000 or less, can get support, a couple (no children) earning £14,000, or less , can get support. A self employed person can qualify in the same way, providing that they regularly put in 16 paid hours, or more, a week.

I once went through the online calcuator for that.... it informed me that, yes, I was entitled to Working Tax Credit and that the amount I was entitled to was £0. [?] I am still trying to choose how I will spend it.
I am single with no kids, so admittedly I wasn't expecting much [:p]

I didnt know it was available for single people....angi dont spend it all at once ok

Be carefull everyone tho with theses tax credits if the powers that be get wind of it the will be calculating that into tenders... hope im only joking.:face-huh:

Single, no dependants, and get ?45 a week!
I rang the Tax Credit number and spoke to them, rather than rely on the on-line info. I found out all the infomation i needed from a very nice lady in Cardiff, i provided all the payslips,contracts etc that she wanted, projected income for an up and coming job i had at the time. All in all it took about 6 or so weeks to process, and i got a back date of payments from the day i rang them, and now get a weekly and very needed boost to a small income, that we all try to live on.

This is very encouraging and I am very tempted to follow your lead, Soils. This is very proactive of you and I admire that. You're right, of course, talking to people directly is much more sensible. I didn't know that self employed people were entitled to anything, which they appear to be; the latter is what I was told by the Inland Revenue, although they did add that they weren't specialists on the subject and that I should check. It might possibly help the petition cause (see forum thread,
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Archaeology/), too, if there are significant numbers of us on 'Working Tax Credit'?
