Gawd this is good stuff...
so many pipes and ciggies!! women cooking, workies scraping away... ahhhhhhhh the good old days (just kidding)
heres a thought... apart from the plus fours I need to buy.... is the introduction of the trowel in to British Archaeology due to the tool being the one used by tradesman/brickies... who obviously were the 'diggers' of early archaeology?

Mortimer Wheeler seemed mad as a brush, no mention of his celebrity wife-beater status or cutting comments on Indians. Particularly enjoyed his description of the naked dancing girl statue, "Yes, a girl of fifteen..."
