Most archaeologists think that because they think they know something about single context recording that they aren’t metal detectorists.

I think that the perfectly good and ancient treasure trove laws (pre magna carta and probably a mainstay of Bronze/Iron Age tribal law), which mostly asked for an archaeological consideration of the record of the site formation processes to stop people fencing “stolen” goods, were replaced by a hysterical rear guard action by a bunch of nationalists who couldn’t bare the thought of lower class “recent immigrant” metal detectorists getting to "all" the treasure before them but who can be bought and controlled with filthy geld; totally lost the plot in the Act and particularly the Codes of Practise of the Treasure Act where they deconstructed “treasure” and created, without statute, some undefined friends of the nation called archaeologists who have some mystical means of support who give for the good of the fatherland because the Department of National Heritage imagined that archaeologists would be on the same pension scam as themselves, an imagination that was used in much the same way to set up the IFA codes and format PPG16..

So there.

This is more coherent but has not spotted the invented archaeologist and metal detectorist fallacy.

The divergence of archaeologists and metal detectorists are details of recording systems and should be discouraged.

"common misconceptions that you believe metal detectorists have about archaeologists" erm... just saw a great write up in a popular tresure hunting mag about the MD rally that mr host was at.. made me want to offer my services and RTK GPS at such another event of its nature to help archeologists and MD's get together so to speak, only to be a little concerened when turining the page to find an advert for a CD with maps and ap's to locate over 90,000 archaeological sites complete with 8 figure grid referances, being sold. it makes me wonder..
