Devine derided Oliver, a former local newspaper reporter and press officer, as ?hapless? and speculated that he was hired for his looks rather than his academic expertise.

However, Oliver dismissed Devine as a ?fool? with a narrow knowledge of Scottish history.

He suggested that it was unwise for a ?plump old man? to comment critically on the personal appearances of others.

Devine?s comments came as A History of Scotland returned to screens last night for the first of five episodes covering four centuries from the 1600s to the present.

Any "popular" programme has the potential to get a slagging off from the academics - but apparently Devine was invited to be part of the advisory panel and turned it down - if this is so then he isn't really in a position to comment.

There are some academics who get a bit possessive over their chosen subject. I haven't seen the programme so I can't comment really on it's content but I always support anything bringing history to the masses.

of course, neil oliver hasn't really been in anything decent since "brotherhood of the wolf"...

I don't know - he was pretty good on the L'Oreal adverts.
