A good song actually about archaeology (with a little artistic licence) is 'court of king arthur' by Gruff Rhys of super furry animal fame - "excavation takes a long time, first you survey and dig down the line'
other stretched ones:
It's only natural- Crowded House
First cut is the deepest- cat Stevens : ok not always the case stratigraphically but you get the idea
Can you dig it- Mock Turtles
and one for all those quarry sites: Gravel Pit- Wu tang clan "check out my gravel pit, there's absolutely nothing in it" well somehong like that.
I suppose you can tell this has come up on site before

Songs that capture feeling about the work:
nine inch nails/johnny cash - 'hurt' "you can have it all, my empire of dirt"
g.g. allin - 'outskirts of life', 'when I die'
Songs that I like to listen to when I dig:
Anything from Dethklok's Dethalbum, especially 'Go Forth and Die' and 'Awaken'
Flogging Molly - 'Drunken Lullabies', 'Black Friday Rule'
Turbonegro - 'Hot Stuff/Hot Shit', 'Wasted Again', 'Do You Dig Destruction'
Anything by Seasick Steve

Bauhaus - Hollow Hills
with the lines
"Ancient Earthwork, Fort and Barrow discreetly hide their secret abode.. the most fearfull hide deep inside, and venture not there on yule tide, for invasion of their holow hills that music holds and Oberon Fill is shurely recommended not for fear of death, in fear of rot. Hollow hills... etc
