I've just seen fantastic job advertised:

this is picture of the future...what we will become...recorders of treasure hunters, because there will no further role for us....

apart from the terrible sentance structure...this is nonsense...

facilitate research into what? the public? the value of education? or just the value of the loot?"

"facilite research" is another non meaning ful phrase?? what exactly does that mean?

and the last bit says it all...we will be seen as only necessary as adsvisors and consultants, in offices somewhere, when the public [those who have metal detectors anyway] bring the booty....
i've not got nothing against using them and peolpe find useful stuff, but really...and why is the govt soo suddenly interested in finding gold...the Maritime research stuff looking for wrecks? ok...bit of a jump? No...theres a huge amoutnt of gold bullion in the Channel and the Med and the Bay of Biscay and in the ocean, its finders, keepers...the govt sold all of the UK gold reserves , partly to pay for Gordon and Tonys war....

Seriously are you OK? I'd give up on the valium and go for elephant tranquillizer.

What exactly is there to object about in that ad (apart from the obvious that we must not in any circumstances involve the public or educate them in any shape or form, which is why my sites have lots of holes - they're not 'ditch sections' they're mantraps for those blasted interested public people types)? This just sounds like a PAS post - you know, that nationwide scheme thats now recorded tens of thousands of finds of which we might otherwise know nothing and supplies vast amounts of data to HER's, identifying sites that may need excavation in the future. Have you been in a cave for the last few years or just forgotten about it? Thanks to metal detectorists bringing stuff into PAS officers I've had digging work on several previously unknown sites.

'A bloody silly job' that doesn't 'need an archaeologist' - we get some daft statements on this forum at times but you're in the running for a prize of some sort. You need more than an admin assistant to identify pretty much any type of metal object made or imported into the country since we stopped mucking about getting flint cuts.

One might not require a fully trained Excavtion Specialist for the role, but i think it would be a good idea for this Useful job to be done by a person with some background/training in Relevent Archaeology..

you're missing my point...look...notice the ads for jobs...they are., of late, top heavy in 'management' positions... 'heritage liason', 'finds liason', 'contract manager' 'geomatician' and theres more. Companies are top-heavy in management and admin and low on appreciating what a good field worker can do. Supervisors running teams are ignored, county monitoe=rs really appear to know very little and only accept 'interpretations' about stuff they are already familiar with....educating 'the public' is ok and all that stuff, but in the end it all comes back to under valued field work, from people who have years of experience and have excavated stuff which doesnt fit in with out dated paradigms of what was happening in 'The Past'....stuff like 'A history of the world....' on BBC doesnt really help either as 'the public' see archaeologists as 'superiour' ytpes, who can tell them what stuff means, rather than showing that all interpretations of past societies are dependant on the values of the present cultures we live in...anyway...like i#ver said before, a l;ot of you just dont seem to get it at all...ok. Do your thing and then in 5 years time, see how many jobs there are for experienced field workers and how much we will be paid....
the fact that rthese threads are still running, long after i, for one, have lost interest, shows that these issues are important and valuable and important to discuss...back to me chickens! and i still havent got me fox yet...Vulpes...you are possibly more strange than i am...i can send you the number of a good anger management counsellor...

I am one of those good fieldworkers... bloody good though I say it myself... and boy I wish I wore tweeds sometimes... people don't like smart arses!
I was once described as being like Sharpe (I thought it was for my devilish good looks) but it was because of how I got where I got... and am a bloody pain in the rrs ...
