I thought it was worth starting this thread as I am sure it will come to dominate our lives over the next month. A number of things occur to me:
- Could we post links to the archaeology/heritage policies of the different parties including regional and single issue parties - or post quotes from their printed manifestos. I am sure we would all like to know how the parties intend to treat us
- Anyone have a view/views on the principals of any of the parties (one obvious extreme right-wing party being the case in point)
- Any archaeologists/heritage types standing for election
- Are we going to have 5 years of joy/struggle irrespective of who gets in. Would a hung parliament be a good thing for 'issue' politics?
- Unions, H&S, pay, tax have all been mentioned in the run up to the election. Anyone have any views?
- Do you vote/abstain/don't give a hoot!!
- Any amusing election interludes....
- Have you asked your local candidates their views on archaeology/heritage?
- And anything else election related....

Archaeologists standing for Parliament? Roman pottery supremo Jerry Evans is standing for the Lib Dems at Birmingham Hall Green.

The Scottish Civic Trust reviewed manifesto commitments from the main parties on topics including heritage/historic environment etc ahead of the European parliamentary elections last year (in case of any interest:
http://www.scottishcivictrust.org.uk/sct...9&typeid=3). Though not primarily concerned with archaeology, they may do the same for this election.
I also seem to remember a recent
British Archaeology where they interviewed the respective ministers/shadow ministers of the big 3 parties? Would be interesting to know if local/regional heritage issues come up in the campaign (and if they differ from the UK-wide vision).

I only vote in democracies. If forced to.....I would only vote for Guido Fawkes-the only man ever to enter parliament with honest intentions.

Just to reply to Kevin's points 2 & 6. I shall certainly be voting if only to help make sure that the BNP don't make any gains. I encourage all BAJRites of good conscience to do likewise (even you Troll, the system we've got at the moment may not be perfect, but it could be oh so much worse). Hope Not Hate!

Well said Geli......each to their own conscience too. I feel that the "system" we have is in fact far, far worse than some percieve it to be. That said, Kevin has an extremely important point (or 9) and I urge all subscribers to get involved. With apologies.... I won`t be taking part in any election/voting but will of course keep a keen eye on this thread. Think it could be hugely informative!:face-approve:

Well turns out I will be in the country... so feel I must make the walk up the hill, along the road and into the guide hut in the field to vote... even as an anarchistic person... I will have my voice heard... even if it is a protest. In the next county, the MSP is a staunch archaeology supporter... Labour MSP Rhona Brankin and its this sort of thing that makes voting tricky.. policy? personality... etc.. the MP David Hamilton.... never heard of him.. and the Labour MP for East Lothian has been deselected!
Anyway.. the point I am badly making is that I will be happy to support Rhona Brankin as she is supportive of archaeology... and you must choose what to do... person or party?
I think this should be an important thread

Sri Lanka: Archaeology sparks new conflict
So how bad can it get!
Quote:The JHU invoked the same argument in December when it presented 29 demands to Mr Rajapaksa, including one for him to rebuild dozens of Buddhist sites in the north. His response has never been made public but the JHU ? which is led by a passionate amateur archaeologist ? claims that the President concurred.
?He agreed to take immediate steps to restore Buddhist sites in the north,? Udaya Gammanpila, a senior JHU member, said. ?He said the army and the archaeological department were already working on it.?
Even if that is untrue, the JHU can directly influence archaeology because Champika Ranawaka, its chief ideologue, is Environment Minister and his approval is required to excavate and protect sites.
Foreign archaeologists familiar with Sri Lanka say that the country ? which is approximately 70 per cent Sinhalese and 20 per cent Tamil ? needs to move past the ethnic issue.
?That debate will never be answered by archaeology,? Robin Coningham, a professor of archaeology at Durham University, said.
ah... forget I spoke.. Archaeology has to be an issue... it has to poke its head up... not say sorry.. not say excuse me and be proud enough to say... OI you... this is important.

I'd definitely recommend getting to know your candidates as individuals. There are also some excellent websites that let you find out how your MP has voted in the past, and whether they toe the party line or forge their own path.
