Some more supporting evidence for the brothel theory please. I was digging a Romano-British structure near Hull ("Hell" would be more appropriate).The structure was located near a known Villa and a roman road passed within about 30m of the site. Around the stone structure were numerous (at a guess 30+) neonates. There was no suggestion that the small structure had been a brothel until a TV programme featured a dig (in North Africa I think) on a structure that was interpreted as a knocking shop. Bingo.Next day, this structure near Hull was being bandied about as a brothel just like on TV. For sure.

We've just had 12 neonates/babies from a road scheme that hit random bits of a Roman settlement - all 12 came from one quite small excavation area with only a couple more from the main, vastly larger, site, so there does seem to be a certain 'clumpiness' to their distribution.....unfortunately you've now got the supervisor using the word brothel......

Has anyone considered baby farming as an explanation? A not so well known practice fairly common in the C 19th when kindly ladies, for a small fee would take in and look after illegitimate children whose mothers could not or did not want to bring them up.
The downside being the children were often deliberately neglected or worse. I believe Britain’s worst (known) serial killer was a baby farmer who is thought to have disposed of at least 400 infants before she was caught and brought to trial.:0
