This is my first time here. my name is Steffan Milonas, i'm 48, And I have been compiling information for a book on CASTLES, for the past 22 years. A complete anaorak. I met Simon (si) Cleggett of Wessex Archaeology,(a VERY NICE man) at his site (new Stanely park school, Carshalton, Surrey), Where I am part of the construction team. He suggested I register on this forum, and ask for help. Although I have information on over 5000 castles within the United Kingdom, I am stuck on over 1000 sites in Southern Ireland. I have their location, but no name or information. And of course, the usual chestnut, I really could do with some funding, to carry on and complete my book. Or even better, a job with or finding castles. I hoping some kind soul out there will help.
Please dont hesitate to e-mail me.
steffanmilonas@yahoo.co.uk.
Thanks for your time.
Kind regards

Hello
Not in a position to help you much I'm afraid but Good Luck with your Quest!!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Merlot in one hand, Cigar in the other; body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO, what a ride!

Are there really that many castles? Wow!
Amazing anyone in the middles ages had time for hobbies like invading France and the Middle East!
I suspect you've terrified everyone into silence by how much you've done already - don't look at me though, not my area, am moderately out of my depth already wading through the literature trying to write an intelligent report on the only one in my report backlog, and my knowledge of Irish archaeology is fairly close to zero.....

Thanks Trainedchimp, will have a look on those sites. Gnomeking, I only list sites that where or are still called CASTLES. I tend to put Brochs in the fort dept. I try and list Towers seperately aswell, although in the case on Scottish Tower Houses, that is a very grey area.
One of the oldest "castle" named sites is Maiden castle in Dorset. but if you search on Ordnance Survey maps or their site, you will find another 12 within the British Isles. Just a few of the 8000 sites I hope to finnish with.
Any of your help however small, is always welcome.
