Is the sell-off of publicly owned forest justified?
Yes/No and any thoughts for the future....
who really benefits? - if timber prices are to increase over time, then surely these are Vital National Assets, and not to be sold-off cheap now.....publicly owned timber sales fund ecological and public interests....private ownership (especially in Long Term) does not guarantee this.

I would like to know if there are plans for reforestation. Does the sell off consist of the timber or the land and resource? If just timber, then is it clear-cutting which is a blight on the landscape and detrimental to the ecosystem? There are ways to manage forest lands that have a considerably less impact and might be considered acceptable practice as a compromise to environmentalist and capitalists alike :face-stir:

The government admits itself that there is little in asset value to be couped from selling off the Forestry Commission and is unable to clarify whether future managment of forestry by private owners will be any more 'efficient' than the current management. Therefore this is a pure doctrinare decision...

I think this article aptly illustrates the value of the Forestry Commission
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/a...s-ago.html
Would a private owner have been interested in finding the road?
Would a private owner have invited an archaeologist onto site without being required to do so as a condition of planning?
Would a private owner have sensitively felled the trees without using heavy plant?
Would a private owner be keen to work out a long-term management plan?
Would we even be aware of this find if it had been made within a privately owned forest?

Looks like Second Thoughts on this _ public pressure has had an effect - now to prevent the sale of the National Nature Reserves (the ecology equivalent of Guardianship Monuments - with added archaeology in many cases). And then move on to the other things we want the nation to keep - the NHS??
Could we sell Unit of One to anyone, do you think??

I hope that they are having second thoughts on the forest sell off. But if they are not, here is the link to the Save Our Forests Petition
http://38degrees.org.uk/
It has 'only' had 470 000 signatures so far, I think that 38 Degrees are trying to get it over half a million.
