A slight digression but another problem with lists is what order do you put the list in?
Best/prefered option first? Geographical starting with local units? Alphabetical? And do you state what the order of your list is based on?
And things get even more interesting when planning is inhouse - do you recomend the comercial element of your council unit/ trust and do companies realise the differences
An intersting point in Wales is all in a name - and a bilingual one at that!
In English your company name may be Suchandsuch Archaeological Trust but if this doesnt put you to the top of those pesky lists use the Welsh version Archaeoleg Suchandsuch and hey presto alphabetical lists seem the way forward }

A rating system for clients to rate services etc? hmmmm that would be intersting, and perhaps more helpful... :face-huh:

As someone who works for a reasonably large non-RO, I was a little alarmed to note that the only advice offered to developers for finding 'appropriately qualified individuals or organisations' for dirt-archaeology in the PPS5 Practice Guide (para 75) is the IFA list - BAJR beware, even the Government are trying to force you to become an RO!

so now IfA membership is a qualification - ther was me thinking it was a professional organisation representing those people who are members...
Once I see the definition of appropriately qualified individuals or organisations I may be happier. Until then, I will continue to work to high standards... indeed I prefer to exceed requirements --- call me an old fashioned archaeologist. Sometimes quality is appreciated... rather than (as Vulpes correctly says) speed and cost.

There is a lot more to quality than how neat the sections are, how academically valid the report is, how fast the temporal contamination vanishes or how much you charge...

A lot more? TC having dismissed some of the obvious indicators I'm interested in what other factors you had in mind......
