Check out the accomodation listed at http://www.visitnpt.co.uk/placestostay/S...OnMap.aspx, which are recommendations on the Afan Forest Park mountain bike centre, so should be reliable and cover a range of budgets. You might also want to consider locations outside the town centre, as most of the surrounding valleys are well served by public transport (buses), for instance Glyneath and Ystradgynlais are probably only 20mins away.

I must admit I have put the phone down before when units have told me there is no accommodation. Interested to see how this works out as most people I know just don't bother when there is no accommodation provided.

All just part of the endemic stab-in-the-back/undercutting culture in commercial archaeology that makes it all sooooo entertaining. Won't change until people stop applying for jobs with cheap-skate units (but I suppose they'll need to put the dole money up first for that to work) :face-stir:

Shirley whats going on here is that units are trying not to discriminate against people who don’t already have accommodation in the area by inviting applicants from outside the area. You could say that outside competition can only increase the calibre of staff….but is it that the units are undercutting local staff by trying to find a calibre of staff who is willing to take the job without accommodation and undercut the local rate (bajr rate ifa rate blahh blahh).


The real problem is that this job only last until the end of October. Not a job, is it, or one that you would want to hang your place in the community on?

How much do you think that you should spend on accommodation?

How about living out of a van for a month. Any views on the economics. I can see a self employed/ employed spilt in how to resolve these problems.

Dino answers the question in a nutshell. Contractors do it because they can, if they can get staff of the calibre required for a given set of remuneration and conditions, then of course they will. It's the way the world works.

Therein lies the problem. Most units don't seem to be interested in high calibre ( experienced ) diggers anymore. As long as they've got people on site as cheaply as possible that's all that matters.
