inspired by the Campaign for Sensible Archaeology thread... lets see if we can have some poetic contexts...
winner to be decide by general non disagreement.. and they get a 6H pencil as a prize.. perhaps with a sharpener.
Heres the first entry from Stuart from Campaign for Sensible Archaeology

"Oh ditch fill 729
you are both orange
and brown
your gritty texture
and firm compaction
reminds me of the smell
of my first love..."

Oh ditch fill 729
You will never be mine
As Stuart has plucked you from the register
The swine, has simplified your subtle hues
And ignored the slightest hint of silky silt
in his rush to vilify you, you common Ditch fill.
Maybe you were his first.
That firm compaction a surprise
Suggesting that your true grit had been
cemented over time as once what was orange turned to brown
and autumn rain penetrated your pores
and fed the yeasts of fleeting memory
and from my slot I see you exhausted
your gritty energy a mere equivalent
your components sorted downstream of life
but beware I have a later but newer context
Tertiary ditch fill 728
Yes I register early
First come first served
italicise my notch, call it copyright, beyond the short description
just another Ditch fill in another slot, another site ticked off,
until the next Ditch, were we will meet again and I will get in early.
Reason: your past is my past

Better than most of what gets written on context sheets, I'm all for it :face-approve:
Would HERs accept reports in verse, do you think?

Dreaded as a rumour,
Alive without humour,
All in yellow, never blinking
On your back, never thinking......
Who am I?

It's not really recording a context, but here it goes:
Preservation is great
But it's still pretty weird
When you're digging a skelly
Who's still got a beard
:o)

And I've tried a haiku...
Pointy trowel in
my back pocket when I sit
down. Loud scream follows.

Loving these... Unit is definately in the running for nthe 6H pencil!
I will throw one into the trench;
Grey brown sily sand with frequent charcoal
But you include death in your matrix
cremated bone
and tears
I smell a hint from dying fire
I smell the fleeting past on my hands
better have a bath

Subterranean Homesick Blues
There's a Bob Dylan movie from 1965
where he stands in an alley
holding up signs.
Just behind the Savoy Hotel in London
'Basement'
'Medicine'
'Pavement'
'Government'
Subterranean Homesick Blues.
This is also the song
that contains the line
'You don't need a weatherman
to know which way the wind blows'
Or as the sign says
'Wind Blows'
I had a site in the late 1990s
very close to the Savoy
and I often walked
fast past
the alley where Dylan stood
flicking through signs.
I had my own agenda
at the time,
and if I'd had the energy
to hold up signs
they would have said
'Stratigraphy'
'Seriation'
'Samples'
'Finds'
Subterranean
Archaeology
Excavation
Blues
'You don't need an archaeological consultant
to know which way
The wind blows'
Or as the sign says
'Blow job'
Bob sings:
'Oh get born,
Keep warm,
Short pants,
Romance
Learn to dance,
Get dressed,
Get blessed,
Try to be a success
Please her,
Please him,
Buy gifts,
Don't steal,
Don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift'
What!!
I guess I must be homesick
cos now I've done
all of them.

With peace and consolation hath dismist, And calm of mind all passion spent...
