Now I just want to say, the glossy DF Newsletter just landed on my doormat today.
Loved it... gritty, useful, full of information and comment, and plenty of it. This is the sort of thing that should do the rounds in every site hut in the UK... and be read, discussed and acted on.
Join them.. the DF is going to be important for us all.
A big congrads to the team. A lot of hard (volunteer ) work from people across the country and from people who give enough of a damn to do something.

I got mine too and I am really impressed :face-approve:
Content-wise it is well written, with a range of useful information. The kind of information I'm sure people will return to every now and again. Features like explaining machine bucket pins are excellent, making the how-to's of archaeology less like playground rumours. I hope that will be an on-going thing.
I like the look of it as well. It may be a small thing, but the glossy pages and good paperweight made me happy. It announces a professional newsletter for a professional workforce. I think it makes a difference to self-esteem, like the difference between getting good PPE and bargain basement cast offs. And the paper will endure the rigors of a site hut better too.

Thanks very much both for the positive reaction- the credit belongs to Chiz but he is up a mountain in Wales this week- will let him know the feedback by text.
Thanks also for your continued support David- we look forward to having more joint get-togethers in the future- details to be thrashed out at a later date!
By the way- please photocopy it to your heart's content and that way it can be read in as many site huts as possible...

I received my copy through the post as well and I am very impressed. Well done to all concerned (Chiz!!).....but I was wondering. I got my copy cos I happened to be back in the UK last week.....could future copies also be made available as online PDFs? I would happily give up on the mail version (saving a few bob I guess in postage) if I could get the same via t'internet.....it would also make it much easier for me to circulate to other 'ethereal' friends and colleagues.....
..........but I have been telling the IfA the same at all levels (IfA directory, Profiling the Profession, 'The Archaeologist' magazine) for many years now and always seem to get the answer 'Well some old codger can only understand the world if it arrives through their letter box, printed in black and white'.....well I'm an old codger!!. I hate paper!! I want it on the net....

I could see that it would have to be member only - otherwise why bother joining.! But perhaps just for this issue - and even as a rolling back issue type arrangement... where the previous issue becomes visible on teh publication of a new one.
It would show what a stonking read it is, and convince a lot of field staff that this was worth supporting and joining !

...but that's not a problem for us IfA members cos additional allegiance to the Diggers Forum comes free. All it would need would be a link where IfA members could register their affiliation to DF and at the same time request either paper or digital copy of the newsletter. As Sophie has intimated, the DF has no problem with the newsletter being copied and passed to non-members.....

i am in favour of a pdf forum dispatch over hard copy, tho clearly some hard copies will be needed to send out to units etc.
at DF we are having to re-think our 'business model'
at present non-IfA members of the DF get the mag as part of their sub, but if we send it out as an edoc, when it can be disseminated to all, why then should non-IfA members join? after all, they can get it off the net for free
consequently, we are discussing what to offer signed up non-IfA members in exchange for the dispatch being a more widely available publication
any ideas to throw in the pot?

How about discussing with IfA to get non-members who subscribe to the DF perhaps additionally online access to the Jobs Information Service? Wouldn't cost the IfA anything if postage wasn't involved...and might be a 'perk' worth recieving for people who felt unable to subscribe to full IfA membership.....

I don't see why non-members of the IfA should benefit from this without paying their subs. Quite a lot of people manage to be IfA members while on a diggers wage, why they should subsidise those who clearly don't wish to be members you don't make clear. Why should the IfA remove one of the incentives to membership?
