I am working abroad at the moment but will be back pretty soon, what i was wondering is, Is it still worth doing the old mass cold calling CV send to companies just to get your name known.

Maybe. It might be wiser to do a more selective mass email. Those larger organisations who are occasionally employing are doing so largely from the list of names who they've recently laid off, and that's usually a fairly long list to begin with! Other companies are employing from known quantities on short term contracts. There are a couple of companies who appear to have more work than they've got staff for, but there seems to be a reason for that........not least because they're not providing subs and accommodation, not that all that many companies are now of course. :face-stir: I know of a few companies who've compiled a back-up list of CVs and anything new is being binned unless it is stand-out amazing. That said, I guess it ultimately wouldn't hurt that much to do a mass email. You never know.

It might be worth targeting the offices of companies who've recently restructured - MetroMoLA and Sheffield based offices for instance.

The best way is to tailor each CV to the specific job title that is advertised NOT a mass mail shot!

A mass email is always worth a shot, I have picked up some really good jobs that way..............and it appears things picking up so get them sent..... better than waiting for jobs tobe advertised in my opinion :face-approve:

I am currently in the UK doing both options. Although it's hardly 'mass CV sending' I am sending a choice few to recommended companies, in the hope my qualifications and enthusiasm will entice them to perhaps write back or at least keep me on file. The most frustrating thing is trying to gain the 'necessary 6 months at least experience', when more often than not there are no jobs advertised towards the sort of person who needs that experience (me - the recently graduated), so you're stuck in a Catch 22.

you could do worse than offer to volunteer, gain some skills, make some contacts and be in the right position when some work turns up. many will disparage working for free but the medium and long term benefits are clearly worth considering

I'm probably in a fairly similar position to edwardajames and unfortunately, having rent and bills to pay means I don't have the luxury of being able to volunteer in order to gain the experience necessary...it really is a vicious circle...you can't get work without experience but you can't get experience without the work! I have volunteered as much as possible at weekends and holidays but still nowhere near the 6 month milestone...
