I laughed then realised, it is not a joke.
Reminded me about this
This is a little story about four people named
Everybody,
Somebody,
Anybody, and
Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and
Everybody was sure that
Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but
Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was
Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that
Anybody could do it, but
Nobody realized that
Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that
Everybody blamed
Somebody when
Nobody did what
Anybody could have done
<SIGH>

I might be biased, but the way to save the industry for the future in my eyes is to encourage the new generation of archaeologists, those who maybe don't have lots of experience but plenty of enthusiasm and interest. I'm of the opinion that not enough is being done - and we, after all, are the future of archaeology.

Remembered from some distant portacabin wall.
Question: How many archaeologists does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: 9
1 curator to place a condition on it and ensure compliance
1 to tender for the job, get the WSI and risk assessment approved and project manage it
1 to change the lightbulb and or watch a contractor do it
1 to write a grey literature report and OASIS it
1 to edit this report
1 to process dead light-bulb for long term museum storage
1 to archive paper record
1 to theoritise it, producing a journal publication on the 'the cult of light in early 21st century southern England'
1 academic to peer review above article prior to publication

Actually Red, it is a good thread that in more pithy comedic soundbites has shown exactly the issues in British Archaeology more than thousand word posts.
Sums it up... including the non involvement of Unit of One
Edward James also makes the valid (non comedic) point - when do we start inspiring, rather than despairing.
ps... spent yesterday doing lots of hard sums and thoughts about teh BAJR Pay and conditions 2011/2012. So all I will say, is.. a) that should make you laugh... then cry.
