This just went up. Not sure on the accuracy. If it is true, whether you agree with him or not, he was still a hell of an archaeologists.

I remember Lewis Binford from my early years as an undergrad. I often wondered if K. Flannery had him in mind as the old timer in

As you rightly said, like his ideas or not, they left a mark on archaoeology.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Supposedly, the old-timer is modelled off of someone else. Binford probably fits in-between the old-timer and child of the sixties a little bit of both and nether.
I guess we'll never know for sure though

To my mind Binford's legacy is that he was one of the contributors to the train of thought in archaeology that enabled many of us to feel comfortable inside our own skins and not to have to adopt the stereotype/attitudes of earlier generations of archaeologists.
