Continuing the trend for downgrading archaeology, Tees Archaeology is being cut from five-and-a-half posts to three. While this does mean that a service will continue, it represents another example of what's becoming a worrying pattern of depressing capacity in local authority curatorial services. Although I know some people on this site won't agree (I'm looking at you, Unit of 1!), the continued reduction in staff advising councils on archaeological matters will surely have a knock-on impact on the amount of work for commercial contractors through a reduction in conditions on planning consents.
