Oh dear.. I iplayer-ed it (new verb!) last night and I don't know if there was some sort of subliminal messaging added to the iPlayer version, but if I concentrated on ignoring the archaeology and history (in a "la-la I can't hear you" way), I quite enjoyed it and I seem to remember smiling occasionally!
It rejoined the realms of proper telly with the on-site banter. Ok, there's the whole stereotype thing, but I don't do PC, the Brits turning up in a Landy and the Germans arriving in a Merc, Marmite, Fish Fingers.... and then the bookish one solves the mystery just as the adventuous ones get back from their death defying activities. Scooby Doo, maybe, but it was fun!
I wonder if things would have been less controversial if they'd all been like this :face-thinks: I know that next week's is bound to be awful as they need to have the obligatory big finale, but I just thought that I would highlight the series 20-odd minutes of glory :face-approve:

I am afraid I watched it too now... I don't actually understand what was going on? and how did nobody ever notice a huge secret tunnel... as Ben wanders about with a hoover in a forest? and the MoD guy... shoot them fer gawds sake... (he promised) it would have saced us from the final episode. How did he manage to scoop up every trace of Joan of Arc - even the blubbing trio could not have helped but noticed? Scooby Doo.. come back... thanks goodness that Mark is not pretending anymore that this is real archaeology. I am not even sure it is real TV... I do confess it had its moments.. small glimmers, but then the elastic of suspension of belief snapped.. and I found myself reaching for the bottle again, gurgling and spluttering.. I like an intelligent bit of fluff... and this ain't it!
I think that magwump is the daughter of Dolly, whose half brother Ben is in fact Vivs dad, after an accident at Christmas in 1989, just before he met Magwump junior and more shockingly, they are all the genetic key to releasing the power of excalibur, which turns out to be an alien artefact, protected by ghosts of those who have died of shame after watching this...
Can't wait!

Oh yeah; I forgot about the sunlit windows and lack of WKD bottles in the underground tomb
..... and the way the MOD bloke silently made off with Joan of Arc.
I think I just got distracted by the fact that their Landy has a radio and a roof rack and mine doesn't
..... but APART from that....
Oh and if that Ben chap is Viv's dad, then I take back all of the nice things I said.

I've not watched it for weeks now, but met a non-arch friend last week who was really disappointed in it. She said basically it wasn't intelligent enough..and compared it to programmes such as Holby City. Then I realised - it's a soap opera!
If we see it that way, it makes more sense. When Mark was saying we were treating it too seriously, he was right. If he'd told us it was a soap, we'd have reacted in an entirely different way. Not as prestigious for him though......

Spoiler!
I am now wondering if Carl Sagan was right and Ezekeil did see aliens in flying saucers... [hm]

I think it probably wasn't so high on the annoyance potential for us because I'm sure there were lots of MOD poeple steaming instead at the representation of the MOD guy. (killing the DOG??? Why????? He was a better actor than the rest of them perhaps? Although I notice he wasn't in lip sync.....)
I don't know much about WWI tanks etc, but I'm sure anyone who does will be picking just as many holes. My main one was - where were the exit wounds for the bullets in the skulls!

Anybody seen the latest issue of British Archaeology? The "In View" crew maintain radio silence on the subject of Bonkers. That's not surprising, as they are drawn from the MA in Archaeology for Screen Media at Bristol University - too close for comfort.
Meanwhile the Spoilheap column is a spirited, anonymous defence of Bonkers bearing a curious resemblance to the spirited defences of Bonkers elsewhere with Mark Horton's name on them.
