My first site director was not you Mr. BAJR. It was someone you know tho . . . Although calling him Hitler is very unfair, he was a decent skin, it was up North close(ish) to Carlisle. Sleeping on floorboards and being paid rubbish volunteer money. It's odd how you come away from these crap conditions with good memories.
And thanks for posting that up!

Phew! i was worries about my true nature being revealed. I can imagine a few people who would count sleeping on the floor as a perk

Nah, flooded tent means the ground moulds nicely to one's shape (snow too), floors are dead un-comfy :face-approve:

I've never done it in a tent. . . I was a scout once, put me off the whole idea, I remember freezing rainy mornings, in a sleeping bag bursting for a pee and having to decide whether you stay there warm and bursting - or go outside, relieve yourself and (err. . .) get wet. Life is full of those sorts of decisions.

Not if you plan ahead, a large screw topped jar can be very useful

I've no intention in staying inside a tent ever again, screw topped jars or not! I was fooled into spending three nights in Galway last Summer under canvas. Total hell. Give me a hotel any day - which reminds me of several rum stories of (short) digs where I stayed in B&B's.

Ahhh! early days, camping out to dig a Roman town in wales then off to the top of a hill in Wiltshire...in the wettest summer (then) on record...It didn't get any better once given me bit of paper...A long dig in Colchester where we had to 'lift' the frozen level off first before start of play! Wonderfull stuff...warm beer in a pub just to feel ones fingers.....ahh those were the days...

But the question is; would you do it again? I'm mystified by people who go on camping holidays in these isles, to me it's like going on a dentistry holiday, two weeks of having teeth drilled and pulled. Then throw on top of that the fact that you are working and coming back to the tent filthy, possibly smelling of organic from the backside of a cess pit and the nightmare is complete.
I think I could manage the South of France, Cyprus etc. in a tent, but otherwise experience has proved me to be a tisantaphobiac.
I realise others may not share these views . . .

CR ...I agree with you entirely....my past is past, one can not revisit it, its bad enough trying to grasp the present (Xmas excluded )as it is!
