What you are looking at is an early 18th century Wine Bottle.
Recognise them from many I dug from Estates in SCotland

is it that simple? what had they been selling wine in before glass? i dont think anybody has come up with a good study as yet. was it your avewrage wine and what about recycling. where were these bottles made?

You are looking at kegs and barrels... wine skins and of course amphorae
Would like to hear from anyone who knows more.
I also have this from 17th century with a delft wine 'bottle' I would call a flask..

If it had been biodegradeable that kind of suggests that there was not much call for reuse. Curently looking at some coffin bottles that I picked up out of a river near Sapele. Ones got Africa Co written on it. Wonder whose company that was.
Maybe the problem with casts, barrels is that they are possibly distribution vessels for wholesalers, at here's are the belimene jar type things which could have been the precursor to the onion bottle, what was in the belimenes?
