In 1991 I was the secretary of the Museum of London 'Prospect' branch and we took the employer to a tribunal on behalf of 243 archaeologists who had been sacked with insufficient notice and without adequate consultation. We won our case, at the time the largest protective award made by a UK tribunal, roughly £2000 per person. Don't know about being scared of blacklisting. Some of the 'victims' of that case are now in senior positions in archaeology undertakings scattered throughout UK and Europe......strangely I still get people coming up and thanking the branch for seeing that action through to conclusion, most recently a couple of months back in Pompey....

In the current climate and all that. Is that your experience? I have never had a problem clocking up the actual time I have worked and I don't see why it would have any influence on future employment. If you are hard working why wouldn't an employer want to continue to employ you?

Sorry! My wording was a little ambiguous. Minimum wage law is concerned that people are paid minimum for the hours which count as time work, including traveling during the working day. It is not clear if the defanition of work time for minimum wage purposes extends in law to people who are recieving more than minimum but are recieving less than there actual work time.

Thanks Kevin, it's worth knowing that archaeological employers have been taken to tribunals and employees have won. Shows the benefits of Union membership.

Never heard of an edge bund getting banned yet, and there must be 1000s of km of them in the UK? - admittedly people aren't usually trying to chuck spoil up them...
