You are quite right. One minima was announced in November 2014, my boss has been underpaying me and a colleague for our grade since before the 2014 rise, quite substantially.

Regarding the job I am talking about, I did take account of the grades and descriptions but I don't always trust them but you obviously have more insight into this. Nonetheless, I am more inclined to regard the job title as opposed to the grade or description which might more reflect what an employer wants to pay. A lot of contracts are very open ended and it would be quite easy to find youself with more responsibilites than your grade and pay reflects.

Yes I can work out what is a good intermediate rate, what is more difficult to work out is whever the average intermediate pay meets the fair rate.

I must confess, when I was looking at the rate of increase for G2 over the last two years I hadn't accounted for minima increase in April. I would reckon that minima needs to increase by 3.5 % annually at the very least.

I think what really needs to be ascertained is what rate of annual increase needs to be maintained in order to reach the Cifa recommended pay scales, with the consideration that these will need to rise inline with comparable occupations. I don't think that the commecial archaeology can ever bridge the pay gap, the gap is just too large, especially for grades above CPIFA but a road map would be helpful in order to ascertain how many decades this will take.

I am afraid I must agree with you that commecial archaeology will ever bridge the pay gap - what I and others hope to do is at least move it forward... and to be honest it is a hard slog. as each company panics that another company may outbid them on a project. However. I can for the first time reveal the following... The G2 Fieldworker Rates for 2015/2016 by company... ( remember this does not include anything like accommodation, travel or other benefits ) Give me half an hour

I have included Number 26 as it includes some companies that you may recognise as well. REMEMBER this is freely available info, based on adverts from 1st April 2015 to the present. I have removed London rates - as they skew the picture and many of those working in London also have NON London rates. ( seen below) It does not include benefits - such as accommodation, travel etc but is a base line for starting salary only. Some companies have put up their Benefits on BAJR ( see here: http://www.bajr.org/Compare/ContractCompare.asp ) But as most contracts are for up to 3 months you won't really see the longer term benefits unless full time employed. THe CIfA Minima for the time period was ( along with BAJR £17,299)

The Welsh units do tend to pay a bit more, I guess to entice people across the border. Professional Archaeologists who are based there seem to be a rarity, which isn't surprising given that most of the work is in England.

Not that I like talking about adverts... so lets just say what is a name? I am a grand high poobah... which means nothing... what I actually do is what matters... ( check the what I actually do bit ) I also talked this over... and agreed to the advert... In effect this is a PO job but at another office. and generous is what you take it to mean...

The idea is that by removing constraints and minimum rates ( which people complained about because then everyone went to the minimum rate by default... ) the market place takes over... and it is up to people... yes my lovely BAJRites... that means YOU - to take it or leave it with jobs. the base minimum protects the digger and the rest should be more... ie... if Diggers are on a basic of 17700... a supervisor level post (G4) ( with the actual job description meaning more than the job title) is hardly going to be scrambled over if it is 18000 requiring either hiring a substantially lower grade of person OR upping rates to get a decent G4 Archaeologist ... Of course this does require some degree of help from archaeologists (but then... the minimas were often cited as holding back growth... )
