The point made by several speakers at the recent Diggers Forum conference was that the IfA/BAJR minima set a 'base rate' for archaeological wages and benefits and of course the majority of employers pay above that level. The advertised rate for many positions is a 'salary range' and I think that applicants should treat it as such and try for the highest point within the advertised range. if as David suggests there is currently a shortage of available field staff, now would seem the time to press for enhancements to the base rates...... (Awaits the flak....)

is this so your bajrness? for instance are digger jobs given as a range when thay are not included in adverts which also advertise for more senior positions? i dont think in the majority of cases that the range is a reality

So you could never have MIfA diggers?

I think you can....there is a MIFA membership requirement based upon a level of qualification, experience and responsibility, normally commensurate with project manager and above and some specialists....doesn't mean that having achieved that level of membership you are destined to stay in such a role for ever. So plenty of MIFAs do turn their hand to digging for all kind of reasons.....not sure of any organisation that pays solely on the basis of an IfA membership grade, most expect you carry out a role in the organisation.....thats where the salary level comes in

OK, just to :face-stir: a wee bit - how many units/employers/companies/whatever-you-want-to-call-'ems actually take any notice of IfA membership? I've seen adverts where there is some general platitude to IfA members, but nothing to suggest that it would have any bearing on pay or position.
There are around 80 organisations registered with the IFA....they clearly take notice of IfA membership and IfA pay minima. With one exception they number all of the large archaeological employers in the UK (Certainly 9 of the top 10).
All advertisers with BAJR take account of BAJR pay minima whether they are members of IfA or not....
Do they? And no I'm not taking the whatsit, I've just not seen any evidence that IfA membership plays any part in an employer's remuneration policy as opposed to provable ability/word of mouth/market forces.

I'd like your (as in everyone's) opinion on this: there is an archaeology contractor that advertises for temp. staff once in a while. Their rates of pay seem on a par, but they do say that although they provide transport/accommodation as appropriate, there is a charge. Now I think this is taking the piss, but what do you think?

THe text is up front. they don't 'have' to supply either of these... though they are required to say if they do. (thanks to teh DF asking me to add that requirement ) if they did not supply this... then you will be paying yourself. I would ask what accommodation... how much... and what transport to site... is teh person driving the minibus qualified as well

I totally agree. As long as people accept to work for employers like this then the lot of diggers will never improve. This relies on peoples desperation, either to gain experience or for an income.
Tool, does this happen in the building and groundworks trade?
