It can easily slip under the radar, but if they catch -up on you there is always a sting in the tail. A few years back some of us got late tax bills for accommodation that we thought was part of the job but HRMC decided was a benefit that should have been taxed....we did have a long discussion on this forum at the time ....(6th July 2008 in BAJR archives if anyone wants to check what was discussed at the time)...

Remember that, I believe the management looked into it with their accountants at the time

To the original poster.
Most experienced archaeologists will know which company you are referring to. I could name and shame them if it helps. I dont actually care what anyone thinks about me and my views about companies. I want to expose those who treat people badly and i will be quite happy to do so. The way people are treated in this so called "profession" is a joke. Thats why the archaeological record which is produced is generally a joke and the end result is a figure of the imagination in the the office. If the stuff which is excavated isnt recorded properly because that person hasnt been trained to record then what does anyone expect? If field workers are not looked after, trained, and respected then they will leave the "profession" just as they start understanding it. Asking someone to pay £85 to share a room in a caravan how does that inspire someone to be a "professional"?

Actually, if the field staff supply their own bunk beds i expect a team of 12 would fit.

Funny you should resurrect this thread today, the same day that I receive a letter in the post telling me that the 'Registered Organistaions complaints procedure is not the appropriate procedure to follow and the allegation has been dismissed'. Seems that staff paying for their own accommodation on away jobs is a common enough practice that it cannot be seen as a problem.
So I was right all along. The CIfA has not got the balls to stand up and speak out against exploitation. CIfA is a sham working in the vested interests of the RAO's. Stuff your professional standards and Code of Conduct, they are not worth the paper they are written on.

if it is indeed common practice then there can be no reason not to name them (all).
If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers
