So how is this one minima thing working out for pay. I have found that whereas my wages used to increase every year in line with BAJR recommendations,they have stagnated over the past couple of years.

The BAJR minima is continuing to rise. and from the adverts I see that rates are remaining steady and even rising. The current median for Digger is around £17568

actually the managers are the ones where the rates are stagnating

If you are not getting these rates, then it is time to put on the negotiation hat and discuss with your employer.

I disagree, these are all valid questions but the question was the one that I asked.

I have found that BAJR's minima in the past, for the different responsibility levels, has had a positive effect on my wages. Since these were abandoned my pay has stagnated. Although correlation does not equall causation, I think that it might do with my employer, and wondered if others had seen the same effect. How do current wage increases compare to previous years?

My employer is responsible for putting up my wage. The cIFA is responsible for the minima it sets and the vast gap between these and their recommended rates, you are responsible for the minima you set and the adverts you take, and it is my responsibility to ask for a pay rise.

Responsibility and being responsible are different things. BAJR has had a positive effect on wages to some degree and you are responsible for setting your minima. Any changes you make will also have an effect, maybe negative, maybe positive and you are responsible for those changes. I am responsible for accepting the wage that I do and the cIFA is responsible for doing I don't know what. Ultimately my rate is the responsibility of my employer.

How far and fast can rates be raised? It surely has to be much faster than the current trend, or else recommended levels will never be achieved. This needs to be assessed and reported honestly by interested parties, can archaeology ever achieve the levels of pay recommended by the cIFA?

Am I earning more than minima? I would bloody well hope so. I'm earning more than minimum wage as well but I don't regard either of these as serious benchmarks.

I think it would be helpful if your reported average wages were more upfront on your website. It would also be helpful if they indicated the general responsibility level that they relate to, as you have indicated in this thread. I'd like to be able to compare the changes to average rates over time.

I'd be interested to know how the average figures are reached. I presume the average pay rates are based on advertised jobs and do not include the actual wages of employed archaeologists. How do you work out average pay from job adverts such as the one I am reading now? This lists three levels of responsibility between £18500 and £26000. How do advertised jobs reflect what people actually get paid? There Is one position in that mix that is grossly below the average and the other two positions are obscured by the combined pay range. We don't know if these positions will be grossly underpaid, paid the average, or above the average. I see a potential for rate ranges like this to skew the figures beyond reality.

I am no expert but it appears to me that the current wage averages above the minima have increased above the average percentage of wage increases over the past two years. This is good but it needs to be this way, and more so, if we archaeologist are to achieve the recommended pay scale without increases being negatively affected by inflationary lag and inertia.

The rise in minima though over the last two years seems to be substantially below the average. Is there any good reason for such a poor increase for some of the lowest paid archaeologists? Does it reflect the average? or is the average better than minima?

The going rates don't give the average rate for G3 or the intermediary grades. This makes it difficult to assess if the pay on offer meets or exceeds the average for these levels of competence.

SO I am confused. This is the first year without a minima for all posts above G2 the G2 still has a minima. If you have a rate that is stagnating, it must have started before the removal of the other minima in April 2015

As to the job you are talking about ( the 18500 - 26000) - I had several long discussions a few years back about this. and you are looking at name as opposed to responsibility... Check the G levels associated. and/or read the accompanying material regarding the jobs... You just have to trust that I check... ( I do make mistakes, but in general, I do ensure that jobs are within the criteria) I work out averages using a number of factors.

The idea of dropping the other minima was to make it a more pro active market for these positions as scarcity should drive up rates. after a year it is too early to tell.

I think you can work out if the intermediate grades are well paid or not... if you look at a G2 rate and a G4 rate... I am pretty sure that you can see where the middle ground is ....
G2 (CPIfA): £17,568
G4 (CAIfA) £20,986

Middlish = £19277
So for a G3 you are looking around £18600 and for a G 3/4 you are around £19900

And lets see what April brings... After all... for 17 years now... I have been increasing and pushing. Push too far and nobody wins... as I found out to my cost... When you look for support... real practical support... It does not materialise
