Bloody hell, I thought I was going to see chavs when I clicked on the link!
Pretend pagans! A ?3.99 book from The Works bookshop probably told them to do it.

You couldn't ask for clearer evidence who is behind damaging a SAM. I hope EH does whatever it can do to these people, who are clearly known. Damage aside, however, I can't really see how this group is any more of a sham or a fake than other pagan groups. Neo-pagans are not a homogenous group in any sense.

Not sure what you mean by 'desecration'. The correct term would surely be 'criminal damage'?

This can include desecration of sacred books, sacred places or sacred objects. Desecration generally may be considered from the perspective of a particular religion or spiritual activity. Desecration may be applied to natural systems or components particularly if those systems are part of naturalistic spiritual religion.
Damage to a York Minster (even by Christians) would both be spiritual desecration and criminal damage.

It looks like someone has done the same trick on Birkrigg Common.

The desecration that annoys me is being charged money to go into cathedrals. Clearly against Christian teachings.

Not meaning to be nit-picky, but given that nobody could categorically state that stone circles were considered sacred sites by their builders (unless someone out there feels that they can, perhaps Dr Who is on the forum) then desecration is probably not an appropriate word.
There are of course those who now claim such sites as sacred to themselves, including no doubt those that caused the damage, but they are on pretty shaky ground. On that basis one could claim virtually anything as sacred. Anyway, this hasn't really got any bearing on the topic and the appropriate person at the National Trust (who manage the site) has been informed about what happened.

Slightly off topic

I think you will find that it is free to enter Cathedrals for worship and a charge is made for visitors. This charge rarely covers the cost of having the cathedral open and the damage caused by visitors.

RedEarth, that's exactly what I was getting at. The past 'sacredness' of Castlerigg is an assumption. Nothing more. It is however clearly an important site regardless of it's 'sanctity'. Back to the sacred desk.
