In your view, what are the essential and desirable attributes and qualities required of excavation Directors and excavation Supervisors?:face-huh:

Number one would be: Readiness to buy their crew a round of drinks. A much respected site director from my London days took this to another level entirely by physically dragging skint diggers to the pub and standing them severeal 'hic' rounds. The end of site party was an event to remember too, or so I'm told.

Realising that unless there is a specific need to teach, it is not their job to excavate each individual feature. That's the excavator's job. The director/ supervisor makes sure that all the bits join up, that the questions get answered and by constantly communicating with their diggers makes sure that the questions change appropriately. They're the level that makes sure that things run, that H&S works, the loos are there, the kettle is on and knows what to say to the contractors who just want you to b****r off. And they're generous with the cake.

Communication definitely. Making what they want clear, what the unit's aims are and what the clients agenda is. Too many staff feel they are kept in the dark regarding the overall site picture and exactly what the unit has in store for them.
I also include under communication, the passing of chocolate biscuits from one side of the site cabin to the other.

Positivity is also important - leaders able to instill a positive working atmosphere are to be applauded. This means-
-a professional approach to all staff (no favourites)
-an honest and open approach to communication with staff

1- Not to treat site staff as paid idiots, i.e. listen to what staff tell about the site.
2- Be open minded with their strategy, i.e. if you have more features than anticipated, change the plan of action to accomadate the extra work.
3- No site drum-head trials and summary executions of staff who argue back, you don't get any work out of dead staff.
4- Ice cream provided when the weather turns hot!

I would disagree.
These are all perspectives of diggers preference.
In the current climate, this is like waving a delusional glass of water in front of a dehydrated salt liker in the desert.

See, my favourite site directors were those who would never asked you to do something they were never prepared to do something themselves.
maybe in this "current climate" as Yellow Pete terms it, that is naive, but personally I always worked harder for those directors who were prepared to do that, the same as now I would never ask someone to do something I was never prepared to do myself.
buying a round of drinks is also essential!
