gps surveying
#1
recently i bought a trimble gps, the thinking behind this was that between jobs i may be able to do some archaeological survey work to sort of supplement my meagre income. have only done one actual paying job so far, but my question is this.
does anyone actually pay for anything in archaeology or is everything done as a favour?
everytime i get close to doing a job the answer seams to be
"ah yes, i was going to get you in to do it but so and so is doing it for free"
quite sickening sometimes.

Your experience highlights one of the aspects of archaeology that is a good or bad thing depending on your point of view. There are a lot of people out there who are willing to volunteer to do stuff for the love of it, however, at the same time they can often be putting people out of a job.

Unfortunately, this is a subject that hovers like a vulture around all the old gripes about pay and conditions in archaeology. No-one is goin to fork out good money, when they can get someone to do it for nothing.

Best regards

Exactly my point, and one of the reasons why we as archaeologists will never be able to earn a proper wage. because there are just too many people who will do a version of our job for free!!
