"In a profession that works for both the public and private sector, there is a great need for a strong, authoritative body to ensure effective self-regulation.This role is fulfilled by the IFA,the profession`s institute"
IFA website under the heading "profession"
Discuss.......
In my humble opinion-"yes there is and, no it`s not"

Possibly a bit harsh.
I would say that the role is fulfilled by the IFA, but not always effectively - and only for part of the profession. They can't regulate people who won't join.

Seems to me that the IFA have a hard enough time dealing with its own ill-practised members, and also publically demonstrating this.

Troll - i think that it would be fairer to say "yes there is, and it tries but isn't currently representative"
There are plenty of reasons to be harsh about the IFA, I agree. After all, it wants to be the central point of contact for professional archaeologists then it has to take the comments/flack while it gets to that promised land of representing the profession. But the key thing is that it is trying, though not very quickly. I'd be more optimistic if either Tim Howard/Peter Hinton etc felt confortable enough to engage on one of these threads (or at the conference) to actually get some where with these important, yet often essentially rhetorical given the lack of IFA official come back, questions. Keep voicing the questions troll, I'd like to see some official answers in some forum.

Greetings and salutations dear sir! Perhaps the IFA is trying but, at the rate of genetic evolution and, not publicly.I am not trying to open season on the IFA (again) here but, simply pointing out that they seem to be all that archaeology is left with.I agree entirely-we desperately need responses from the IFA to questions and suggestions from the profession at large and further, we need an institute that will represent the needs of the profession and more importantly, the finite resource in a public way.My very best to you and yours for 2006!
An important addition to my initial observation would be this-the statement by the IFA is simply "what it says on the tin" and I would argue that the IFA simply does not do "what it says on the tin"

All the best to all in return.
Lets hope we can all see some IFA responses before too long.

Communication channels are open.... but it may jsut take a bit of encouragement to make sure they don't go rusty from lack of use.
At least the IFA talk... Prospect are still invited but seem to prefer to carry on without any discussion with BAJR... pity.... this is one of the best places to let the people they either represent or want to represent know whats going on.
Another day another WSI?

I think it would be fair to give the IFA the benefit...for a while. Their milk teeth have just fallen, perhaps, so lets wait for the permanent teeth to take hold and see what sort of bite they really have.
As for Prospect; I'm still waiting for them to get back to me 6 months on.
Are there any members or lurkers out there who are Union reps and would like to show that their colours are not fading as fast as it appears....?
