'3 June Conference - If we want change in archaeology it's up to us'
There will be a free one-day conference at the Museum of London on 3 June, organised jointly by the IFA Diggers' Forum and the Prospect union.
The problems with pay and conditions in archaeology are well known. What other industry tolerates its new-starters earning as little as £13,300 a year with little opportunity to advance their careers? What other job can survive the haemorrhaging of talented people who simply can't afford to stay in the profession? How much longer do we have to put up with no meaningful training for those at the sharp end of the industry? It's time for change.
The aim of the conference is to bring together as many archaeologists as possible so we can work out how we can collectively make things better. No one is going to bring about this change for us.
The sessions will include discussions on pay and conditions and training. As well as confirmed speakers Kate Geary and Tim Howard (IFA), Antony Francis and Dave Allen (Prospect), and Chris Clarke (Diggers' Forum) there will be time for lots of debate. We want to hear what you've got to say.
The conference will take place on Saturday 3 June 2006, 10.30am - 5.00pm, at the Museum of London Lecture Theatre.
Reasonable travel expenses will be covered for members of Prospect and the IFA. Claim forms available at the conference. Non-IFA members of the Diggers' Forum may be able to claim a contribution towards travel expenses - contact Jez Taylor (Diggers' Forum) jezt@molas.org.uk Tel. 020 7410 2242 / 07951 024197
