You could be right. It was a number of years ago, so maybe my memory's not what it was. However, at the end of the day, not a lot of difference between any of em'. As far as the interests of the archaeologist are concerned, they're all tossers!!!! (unions, that is).

I worked for this unit years ago and situation was pretty much the same then - id been out of work for about two months to look after a poorly family member so had no cash coming in and this was the only job about. I had to borrow my train fair off of a friend and when I arrived was horrified by the state of the accomodation - stained matress, red light district, box room in filthy house! And I was paying for the privilage - handed in my notice in the first week!
But as Grindlecat states I could only do this as i was basically homeless at this stage and living between my grans house and a friends living room floor as i couldnt afford anything else. Please dont assume that mobile staff are poor little rich kids living rent free in their parents mansions the reality may sometimes be this but it is often much more complicated.
Luckily got a job offer off my local unit before i got home but it was best part of two months before I saw a penny!
But the important thing is that this was early 2004 in the 'boom years' - this unit has not just sudenly started doing this because of the economic downturn - and if staff could be found then its even easier now!
Stop putting up with it!

ok...to reply to several of you at once...mostly its a thankyou for understanding..
to 'amiable'...you posted my Personal message from my Profile here, or part of it. I take a very dim view of that, sir! The point of that message was that if you wanted to argue some point with me, do it on the forum pages...as for my contempt, i dont know you to decide if i have contempt for you or not?? yet? As for the rest of your duab on the cave wall here...just made me laugh! You trotted out the oldest English colonial attitudes i've heard for years...basically, that us Celts are all terribly emotional chappies and really should develop the old stiff upper lip...ha ha ha ha ha....well, i'll keep me Celtic passion and you can keep your stiff upper...ok....and thanks for the laugh, old chap.
I do have pity for 'sheep' [as stated elsewhere , by another, on this thread] who take a suppine approach to any encroachment on our pay and conditions.
Not all is Green and Golden in the Land of Eire, for sure, and a lot of units there do blatantly take the piss, but there is more reaction to it and less acceptance...now of course, its utterly tits up and i dont know if theres any large scale digs going on anywhere there.
I came back here for family reasons as well, partly [elderly, frail mother and all that sort of thing...but thats another story about health care for the old and infirm and poor!! and she's paid her taxes all her life and never moaned about a damn thing, ever...anyway...]
As for the pub landlord, we did speak today and he is a very nice guy and i agreed to tone it down a bit and i will, ok.
And i've been beaten up by republicans as well, so im fairly objectionable to everybody it seems...also police, NF members and random guys in pubs all over Europe....i kind of take it as a mark of my individuality...and the bit about violence...well, sometimes it does change things, but the songs are better and yeah, sure, if we could all unite under one banner, which i guess is what Bajr guy is trying to do, it would give more strength and clout...
toady i've been cleaning out grain silos on the farm where i live and tomorrow i'll be painting stuff...not massively interesting, but i feel better doing that for a ?5 an hour and a few beers than i do working for gobshite companies who take the piss out of me...so...now im off to me anger management course :-) he gets quite cross if we're late and sometimes even taps his watch and raises an eyebrow! such melodrama! maybe he's not English....
and the chickens are doing well, thanks....but theres a fox around and i shall 'av him, soon...any ideas Unit? i dont want to shoot the bugger, but...well, you know how it is...and thanks for the drinkin invite...Nigeria's a long way to go for a pint, but, sure, dont they make a really strong Guiness there?:face-approve:

just noticed the Wooldridge reply...NO. This is the point...'hard to let' means a slum, you plonker...junkies, rats and fascists....also, companies on 'away' schemes pay B&B for thier people, even the traffic boys and shit truck cleaners and that guy who drives the truck full of water up and down, surpressing dust! whats that about anyway?, not the other way around.
For Gods Sake...you just dont get it, do you. Dont mail me Kevin, as you already irked me earlier on another thread when you effectively accused me of being racist for using the 'pickey' word for travellers and went very quiet when i told you i knew some, worked with some and have on occassion lived with them...so, fine , go and work for tuppance and pay them as well...im sure you'll go far.
It doesnt matter what authority it is or whatever...ITS NOT RIGHT. ITS NOT FAIR. ok...was that polite enough for everybody?

I worked for this unit a little while back, and tell everybody that I meet to never ever work for them (I worked for them for a couple of years). I have a number of issues with this unit, at the fore front of which is the pay. As it is worked out a month in arrears, what you are paid at the end of the month is never quite what you work. For instance, they will pay you for exactly four weeks, with one month in every 3 having 5 weeks pay.

My girlfriend was also living in this accommodation, and it was infested with rats. When she told the "housing manager" she was told to buy a rat trap. This was such a poor attitude, that we left not too much after this.
BAJR Note - Ranting is fine... but think before you post... read the AUP... consider asking me first whether you can post... and then... ONLY then post. Although it is difficult to work out who you are talking about, it can be done.. I now know and would suggest that the words.. whole story .. need to be added. THats why you contact me. Anyway... to ensure compliance with the AUP. I have soft deleted sections.

Sorry, don't mean to rant, but site conditions were also poor. There was one job where we were told that as the site cabins were 10 minutes away, that the travel time from site to the facilities would be counted in the break. This gave us a 10 minute break in the morning, and a 10 minute break for lunch. - soft delete 2 -

I was a naive archaeologist, and left due to what was going on at the time. I certainly would notify bajr about this sort of thing now, but was not even aware that I could at the time (I left there in 2007) I am now a member of prospect and thanks to my time with other units, can see how a professional unit can be run. I will write a list of grievances at the week end, when I have more time (as they are many), but it may be that things have changed (although it sounds like they haven't). That is why I am interested if people have had similar experiences more recently. Obviously there is nothing bajr can do if it is not notified, I was just surprised that more people have not come forward about this. Maybe my experience was a one off? I hope so, but I doubt it!
