Christopher Dore's comment at the bottom adds an interesting wider perspective, not just on the archaeological jobs situtaion but indeed on which direction the whole structure of the 'industry' is going :face-thinks:

Chris perspective was mainly from a US point of view. That is not to say the same is not happening in the UK, or will start to happen here, just that it is much further along in the US. In about a decade or 2 you will probably not have any individual arch companies left in the states except for a handful of niche companies. Most arch will be undertaken by environmental firms- their profit margins are just so much higher, pay too, that they can afford to buy out archs.
It will be interesting to see if archaeology here goes the same way.

Sorry, yes, I'd realised that although it's not obvious from my post! The whole angle of his comments does to some extent reflect what's happening here though, if only on the 'consultancy' side
