press release
We are proud to announce the creation of a dedicated Heritage Media website.
Past Horizons Heritage Media
http://www.pasthorizons.tv
Its the first of its kind dealing exclusively with archaeology and heritage. This video sharing site is similar in many ways to You Tube, and like that site, you can view videos or sign up and upload your own, comment and rate other peoples videos too.
There are several categories ranging from Excavations and Training to Humour and Places to Visit. We have already over a hundred online, and look forward to seeing this grow over the coming months and years, as this becomes the place to visit for sharing our passion for archaeology.
In addition, the site also contains links to the online pageflip archaeology magazine Past Horizons, a weekly Podcast news report from Stonepages & BAJR, a music radio station to match your mood and also the valuable Past Horizons Project search, giving access to hundreds of archaeology projects across the world.
Best of all#8230; it's Free to access and is your resource to use and add to.
Enjoy the past.

Online Archaeology has undergone a major revamp, and is a sexy clean easy to use site... a website that many could look to for how it should be done... a mass of information and technical wizardry hidden beneath a smooth interface that invites you in rather than puts you off!
I am sure Steve will blush... but hey... a good site is hard to find... and this is a good site... if you have not discovered the joy of online archaeology yet... ! Have a look.

nice touches are the gallery, rss feeds, and of course the map...
looks like we might have a first

As one element in RCAHMS' celebration of our first hundred years a series of four research workshops is being held in 2007-8. The RCAHMS Centenary Workshops will explore important aspects of Scottish culture and society where RCAHMS can contribute significantly to the public understanding of national cultural identity in collaboration with a wide range of institutions across Scotland.
Attendance at these workshops is by invitation only. Following each workshop a related online discussion forum will be launched; contributions are invited from anyone who would like to participate.
Collections and Approaches: researching the countryside
Dr Margaret Mackay, School of Scottish Studies, University of Edinburgh, and Ms Kirsty Lingstadt of RCAHMS
16 November 2007
Mapping and Meaning
Professor Charles Withers, University of Edinburgh and Dr Piers Dixon of RCAHMS
26 March 2008
Artefacts, Records, Monuments and Sites
Professor Ian Ralston, Archaeology, University of Edinburgh, and Dr Rebecca Jones of RCAHMS
10 April 2008
Excavating the future: towards an archaeology of the Modernist City
Dr Miles Glendinning, Architectural Conservation, Edinburgh College of Art and Ms Diane Watters of RCAHMS
14 May 2008
The discussion I am involved in is quite exciting...
http://centenary.rcahms.gov.uk/workshop3/discussion.php
SO I am opening up the discussion here as well.. soon the papers from this workshop;
Artefacts, Records, Monuments and Sites will be up as well...
But to start you off... have a read of the site and look at the concepts involved, the use of artefact, the information required, the potential information that is available, the need for keeping/chucking. How to relate artefact to location... etc...

Does anyone know anything about excavation of old penal colonies and prisons in Australia? I know some work has been done, such as the discovery of Ned Kelly's grave last month and that paper that looked at the button economy in the prisons. Cheers.

Here's a topic for a certain type of story of which i have had more than my fair share over the years, that is accidents-which make for good telling afterwards, for example-
Working down south in the summer of 89 I had the task of showing a bunch of boy scouts round the site giving a little talk, after a short while i got sick and tired of them clowining about-so i gathered them up and told them this is not a playground and that with tools lying around, holes in the ground and grid pins they were an accident waiting to happen so "just look what your doing and where you put your feet" i snapped at them, and as i turned round i promptly stood on the end of a hoe and whacked myself in the face with the handle-great big OUCH!:face-confused:

IFA Archaeological salaries benchmarking report |

The IFA Archaeological Salaries Benchmarking Report has been released and is available to download at
http://www.archaeologists.net/modules/ic...report.doc
For the first time a definitive study shows how far archaeological salaries lag behind 'comparable' posts.
The report concludes:
Though one option would be to implement a programme of staged, above inflationary increases to the minimum salaries until a target salary is reached, the factors affecting archaeologists? pay are complex and any move to increase current IFA minima can only be made following extensive consultation with, and detailed consideration of the impact on, IFA Registered Archaeological Organisations and others. Consideration must also be given to the extent to which any improvements can be effected without significant progress towards barriers to entry to professional archaeological practice.
To this end, IFA is now seeking opinions on the best way forward. The IFA would welcome suggestions on other options but is committed to making minimum salaries more realistic. Doing nothing is not an option.
Let battle commence....
