Which one first?? |

Jsut had this query... and had to confess I was under the impression that Primary fill was indeed that... the first etc...
Any smarty pants out there that can gainsay that?
heres the basic question:
Quote:quote:I assumed that a primary fill was (logically) the one stratigraphically following the cut in sequence. I am told that this is not necessarily so, and that there are also secondary and tertiary fills that also may not correlate with the second and third fills in sequence. Further information than this I could not obtain. What is the basic rundown on primary, secondary, and tertiary fills?

Some years ago now (more than I care to remember) I worked with the almost-legendary Jon Hall (he of the cartooning ability). I lost touch with him in the late 90s, but seem to recall seeing him on a T*me T**m special in Ely. Does anyone happen to know where he is, and how to get in touch with him?

APPAG - 20th May Pay and conditions |

Quote:quote:APPAG now wishes to have an opportunity to discuss these submissions and other relevant matters with various representatives of the archaeological sector on 20th May, prior to the drafting of a short
report making recommendations to improve the pay and conditions for
archaeologists working in the UK.
Sadly, although I was kindly invited to go and make a short submission as BAJR, I am booked up on 19th May and can't get to London by 10am on the 20th.... This is a blow to me... as its a chance to speak out.
Can we... as BAJRites.. put together a short statement to be read out there ....... this is very very important -- its a chance to speak out..
Its complex.. so can we put into a pithy statement our collective view? I know we all come from different backgrounds.. and this could be a strength.
To start off...
Council and Govt pay scales for archaeological and heritage officers have to be national... so an HER officer or Planning Arch is on the same grade in every county... Field staff working in these areas have to be regraded above the cleaning staff (no offence to cleaning staff) parity in this sector is key to parity in the commercial sector.
Formal, affordable external/free inhouse training as integral a stepped pay scale... the more skills you gain, the more you are 'worth' and this should be seen as investment in all our futures.. it does not matter that you tain someone and they leave to another company.. as you will replace them with someone trained at another company.
Perhaps even company performance bonus? (though this is outside the APPAG discussion)
Benefits to ensure field staff are not 'starting fresh' each contract.. which creates a cycle of poverty. (who was ever able to save on a digger wage... remember that to even make the minimum annual salary you have to work a whole year)

Laser 3D image of artefacts |

Hi all,
I seem to recall a recent (or not so recent?) thread on here about a do it yourself guide to constructing a 3D laser scanner for making 3 dimensional images of artefacts.
I have been trying to find this thread, but have looked in vain...could someone point me to that information?
We're trying to set up a website for prehistoric chipped stone artefacts from the Levant and would like to look into this technology to exchange images etc.
Cheers

We had an enquiry from someone through the Past Horizons Tool Shop about how or where to buy a Krafse (Norwegian Digging Tool)
Gary Brun if you are reading this do you know of such a thing.

Given the recent...ahem... situation. I thought it might be interesting to discuss what it is that people want / expect from a professional organisation.
Free tickets to the cinema? A voice in parliament? accreditation? that sort of thing... :face-huh:
Please look at positive benefits ...

New journal: Critical Archaeology |

Dear BAJRites,
this is an announcement for a new archaeology journal, which may be of interest to the BAJR community.
Critical Archaeology is a new forthcoming archaeology e-journal to be distributed on the internet by the Groningen Institute of Archaeology. The aim of Critical Archaeology is to provide an open and accessible platform for critical comment and debate across all branches of the discipline.
It is an international journal with the aim to foster critical debates in archaeological practice and theory, heritage and the politics of the past in the present. We especially encourage critical, challenging and controversial papers dealing with selected aspects or wider issues pertaining to archaeology and related sub-fields.
The concept of Critical Archaeology entails to situate the journal between the fast moving world of the internet, as seen for example in blogs, and more traditional archaeological printed journals. Therefore, Critical Archaeology will be available only online, with articles available for download in pdf format.
Although the precise journal format is still being worked out, Critical Archaeology aims to publish two principal kinds of contributions:
- short opinion pieces and conference or book reviews of ca. 1-3 A4 pages in length;
- longer research papers of ca. 3-4000 words in length
Research papers will be subject to full peer-review, while shorter contributions will undergo editorial review.
We would welcome both individual contributions, as well as suggestions for thematic issues of Critical Archaeology.
