  Discovering the Archaeologists of Europe
Posted by: BAJR Host - 8th January 2008, 03:52 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (3)

http://www.discovering-archaeologists.eu/

Found this website today... for the life of me I can't quite work out what it is about... Discovering the Archaeologists of Europe

I did no know they were lost [:p]Big Grin

seriously though it is

Quote:quote:a transnational project, examining archaeological employment and barriers to transnational mobility within archaeology across ten countries of the European Union.

:face-huh:

but ... er what are they looking at? I searched for some hard details, but drew a blank... but then I am sloppy!

Surely the barriers are er... well... there are not supposed to be any are there? Apart from ability in archaeology and being able to fill in a context card in the language of choice? Perhaps I am just cynical, but then it dos look like a nice trip around Europe... I vote me onto the next committee [:p]

If anyone can come up with a good explanation I am seriously interested. given the influx of European archaeologists into the UK and visa versa. I would like to know the outcomes and the reasons behind this.... it may make interesting reading

I wrote and collected this piece about cultural vandalism of statues. Had to stop as I was getting too angry!

  Arthouse BAJR?
Posted by: BAJR Host - 4th January 2008, 01:18 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (6)

http://www.bajr.org/temp.asp

well... I do try to push boundaries in archaeology.. I enjoyed creating this piece with images and music that reflect the strange life of the buildings archaeologist - often walking alone (or in piars of course... with H&S) through empty factories and Mills, derelict farms and disused hospitals (one comes to my mind!! - Nothing like spending Christmas Eve recording a mortuary!))

Is there a place to present archaeology in a more contemporary manner? is it already there? do people want to try it themselves... sign on to http://www.vuvox.com and create your own free account.. I have Mario Klingemann to thanks for taking me down this new path... I have always been interested in music (sound samples) and photographic images.. this seemed a brilliant way of releasing the creativity...

OR

should I lay off the juice? Big Grin

  Time Team Down Under
Posted by: Arthus - 1st January 2008, 05:33 AM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (37)

I'm an archaeologist working in Western Australia.
I wrote to time Team but got no response. So if anyone works for them please pass this on.

Time team is very popular here, but when you say you are an archaeologist working in Australia people look confused..

They just don't think about the 60000 years of human occupation.

Australia is still a very racist country and Aboriginal people die 20 years before whites.

In Perth until 1968 Aboriginal people were arrested for walking across the CBD.

There is so much potential for TV archaeology here.

And it has not been done yet.

For example, in West Australia Rottnest Island is Perths favorite holiday spot and virtually no one knows its history.

From 1838 until the 1930s it was a concentration camp for Aboriginal people. The records show that twelve Aboriginal men were executed in what is now an expensive hotel and the guests sleep in the old codemned cells.

The Grave yard has the poorer peoples camp site over it.

Several thousand men died of influenza. Aboriginal oral history suggests many more executions.

Last time I went I found one photo in the museum.

See Sally Morgans painting on the web 'welcome to Rottnest'

Many holiday makers would be appalled if they knew, especially those from Europe.

So why doesn't some TV types link up with the ABC or the SBS and go for it.

So if anyone who can do something reads this contact me.

I need credit for the idea and a spot on the program idealy designed to upset racists...

  Lots of Work in Australia
Posted by: Arthus - 1st January 2008, 04:53 AM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (48)

I'm from the UK but did my basic degree at the University of West Australia. I then worked in Yorkshire before returning to WA to complete my honours year which is needed to work here.

Australia is in economic boom and there is a shortage of archaeologists. The pay is very good here. Most of the work is walking the route of new mine roads etc looking for lithics and art etc.

It is not rocket science.

The most important attribute for working in Australia is anti-racism and respect and knowledge of current Aboriginal people.

Some of the people I went to Uni with were quiet racist and were only interested in colonial stuff, however many of them now work in Indigenous archaeology, some may have changed their minds some are just doing it for the money.

Many white Australian archaeologists believe that as Australian only they can work with Aboriginal people. In fact this is rubbish, outsiders who wish to learn have just a good chance of geting on with Aboriginal people.

Australians are trying to protect 'Aussie jobs'.

But if you are younger enough to get a working holiday visa and act fast you can get a $90000 a year job and then will be able to get citizenship.

And sensitive companies who wish to work FOR Aboriginal corporations and communities should think about coming over.

Anyone can contact me if you need info tips etc.

And if a company you can pay me money to make links!

Unfortunately, I don't think this boom will last forever. US/world credit crises plus worker uprising in China will see to that (50% of Australian trade with China). So I estimate two years of boom left

  Hogmanay Resolutions

A happy happy New year to you all.

A great big thanks for 2007, we are stronger as a group ...

My resolution for 2008 is to take BAJR into new territory.. more interactive, more edgey.. and more fun!

I hope to make 2008 a year when BAJR supports all the work already happening in Public Archaeology (local groups, detecting, community archaeology, education) I am leaving my job at East Lothian Council to ensure I have more time to spend on this... I really care about archaeology for all... so thats my pledge...

Big Grin
