On November 22nd
Roy Clare the head of the MLA said
Quote:quote:
The work of the Portable Antiquities Scheme is of great national importance and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council is delighted to see the benefit it has delivered for finders, museums and the public this year. We are committed to seeing the scheme evolve with even greater impact in protecting the countryâs heritage and drawing the public and the museum world into a shared understanding of our past.
today in British Archaeology p7 we have this
Quote:quote:"In the week that it emerged the government was soon to announce that the £150m Stonehenge roads and visitor project was to be scrapped, the museums, Libraries and Archives Council said it planned to shed the Portable Antiquities Scheme's central unit, effectively initiating the scheme's end.
Angie Bolton, FLO for Warwickshire and Worcestershire, told British Archaeology that they could not do their job without the central unit. "We need the expertise of the finds advisor's", she said, "we need the database". Asked if the scheme would fall without the central unit, she replied, "Definite, yes. It will fold"."
This means people like Roger Bland, Michael Lewis, Dan Pett and others ...Mr Clare wishes to have any remaining FLO's (the ones that don't leave the scheme) sent out to 'Hub Museum's in the regions, which means that you will find it very difficult to record anything unless your near one of these museums?
Like it or not... are we going to see an outreach organisation collapse! Find out more .. please come back with any info you can... this is peoples jobs... this is ten years of work! Ten years! Wasted? decades of getting to the point where the PAS existed... Do we want to see a return to the 70s? I certainly don't... My respect for the PAS has increased over the past few years.. I for one will not stand by and watch this happen... under the guise of reorganisation or rationalisation... what next?
I am reminded of the poem... I stood and watched them take the teachers.. and did nothing... then they came for me.
Heritage counts?
Get back to me with anything.. is this for real.. or a scare? [:0]

Report writing |

As a unit, all our reports go out with the name of the author prominently displayed. I have noticed, however, that some of the larger contractors have gone all corporate and produce reports under the company name only, sometimes causing some resentment. My question is:
Should report authors be credited for the work they do?

Archaeology of the Thornborough Area
an excellent use of web in the planning process .. they (agree with the project or not) -
have shown how to use technology to provide information, so it shows it can (on a long term project) be part of the process - and should be part of the site archive..
I like it... (still a few rough edges) but I like it...in fact love it.....
http://www.archaeologicalplanningconsult.../index.php
Quote:quote:Welcome to the Thornborough section of the APC web site, which aims to provide information on the archaeology around Thornborough Henges. Over the last four or five years so much information has been uploaded regarding Nosterfield and Ladybridge that we decided it was time to re-organise the site, and this is the result.
You can find information on all the archaeological investigations related to Nosterfield Quarry that have taken place, access the original site records and finds lists, browse photographs and view an online GIS (interactive map) displaying the archaeological features, fieldwalking plots etc.
The various archaeological works undertaken on behalf of Tarmac since 1995 are currently being brought together to form a single body of data, which can be accessed through the interactive map on this site. This is a work in progress, and it will obviously take time to assimilate the information collected over such a long period and by a number of different organisations, so please bear with us. We hope that the data will be supplemented by integrating other data sets, such as metal detecting finds etc. from other professional and amateur organisations alike.
This will eventually supercede the Nosterfield and Ladybridge sections of this web site, but the legacy pages will remain available through the links from the APC home page.
Please note that the resources available through this site are currently in development. Many past datasets are still to add, and new data will appear as work on site progresses. See Site Map for a brief overview of the web site structure.

Current Archaeology on Community Archaeology |

the latest Current Archaeology has an opinion on Community Archaeology which is pretty damning ... however BAJR quite agrees with most of it... though I did smart as I am currently working on 2 (organising one!) and am getting into training and other advice... including making templates for "How to.... " get money OR find tools OR carry out a survey etc...... where are the resources.... etc
But its funny.... I gave a donation to a society (and it turned out my donation was the largest they had that year ... even HS gave them less! So how can the clubs survive, when there is little support...
Where are the FLOs for Digs? In Scotland we have the wonderful Helen Bradley, Adopt-a-Monument Officer from the CSA who has to cover the WHOLE of Scotland - but brings valuable help to groups...
http://www.scottisharchaeology.org.uk/pr...adopt.html
Why not 5 or 10 of her? Why not more archaeology in the classroom? what about building communities with archaeology/heritage/natural resources... actually use archaeology for something positive?
Not just to mitigate for a development, but to be part of a community soul?
Last weekend, we fieldwalked, washed, recorded, geofizzed, dug and researched⦠over 70 people turned up.. and more are coming for the Easter Big Dig⦠many are coming over the winter to learn survey and dig and draw etc etcâ¦.. new skills ! An they love it⦠absolutely love it!
And so do Iâ¦.
I looked at the CBAs Community Archaeology Forum - a great idea⦠however..
http://www.britarch.ac.uk/communityarcha...a=HomePage
The Latest News is October (2 months agoâ¦)
There are only 13 projects
Two finished in 2005, one was last updated in January 2006, many pages donât work some are quite good indeed⦠however⦠you find there is only 10 actual groups involved⦠and spread across 2 years and the whole of the UK it is a bit â¦. Erâ¦. Small?
I started a list of Groups across the UK⦠but felt I did not want to get in the way of the CBA site.. but I can tell you.. I could collect around 2-3000 groups! Some only 5 people others with hundreds!
So we have the desire⦠we have the people, we have the potential â¦. But where is the support⦠the cash? The templates? The resources?
Oooooooooo eckâ¦. Can I feel a BAJR crusade⦠have I found a new direction??
Hmmmmmmm
Read the Current Archaeology ⦠give us an honest viewâ¦. Shooting for the stars⦠or p##sin in the wind

Seeking Jacky Hawker |

I am very keen to contact Jacky Hawker, last heard of living in Edinburgh, regarding her book 'A Manual of Field Drawing' published by RESCUE - The British Archaeological Trust. I am aware that some people find enquiries such as this on public forums questionable and I am not asking that her address or contact details be posted on the forum, but rather that if anyone knows of her whereabouts, they could ask her to contact me urgently either via the RESCUE e-mail address (rescue@rescue-archaeology.freeserve.co.uk)or via my personal e-mail address (cgc@ccumberpatch.freeserve.co.uk). The matter is very much to her advantage so I would appreciate assistance in this matter.

Sadly there has been a breach of security of the web host and as BAJR is mainly run from MYSql databases (the fact you are reading this will give a clue what this forum is running on!)
this means all sections of bajr have been shut down....
i will keep you up to date with developments
no personal or sensitive info is stored on BAJR databases!

County council pay awards - Backpay for diggers |

Many archaeologists in the employ of any commercial units tied into the county council pay scales will be pleased to hear that the final percentage rise they have been awaiting has finally been agreed and backpay from april should soon be arriving in this months pay!!!
And as a quick heads up to those who have flown the nest if you have worked at a county council or ex-county council unit/ trust at any piont between april and now you will be entitled to recieve backpay on the wages you earned during you time spent there so get pestering your old employer.
Does anyone know what the best course of action is if they dont pay up, or how thepay award system is calculated if the employee was working overtime?
