Where did the good times go? |

I am feeling nostalgic, does anyone else miss the old days of commercial archaeology when you could just roll out of your tent in the morning and be on site in five mins nursing a terrible hangover? If health and safety said no shorts in summer, we said no matter and craftily wore sarongs. Am I looking at the past through rose tinted safety goggles?

In recent discussions about digging up your past.. it seems that the social and living history is as imporatnt as the remains (duh!)
The trouble comes with the defined roles of 'archaeologists' who dig holes and look at bones and pots... The various 'new' roles involing built heritage, social history, modern archaeology etc... suggest that we are moving towards - or should be considering moving towards being Heritage Enviroment Professionals .. where within that braod brush, all these roles can exist, overlap and support.. without the credulous eyebrow raising that accompanys a request to record a bus station while it still is a bus station.. or a mill before it closes (I missed the last mill in midlothian by a few months!) The IFA and IHBC could then merge happily into a new organisation, which encompasses the 'whole' of heritage from building to pit, from science to oral histories?
thoughts?

Get a Trowel - where's my order..?! |

Is anyone else having problems with a Get a Trowel order? I placed an order 10 days ago and the money has been taken, but I've heard nothing from them. I've e-mailed twice, without response, and their telephone message service is full so won't accept any new messages. I'm starting to worry that I'll never see my order, or my money, again....
Has anyone actually managed to get anything from them recently?

http://www.bajr.org/passport.htm
here we are... on online preview of the prototype waved about at the IFA conference.
To operate it... click the corners to turn pages...
thoughts??
suggestions??
I am already thinking it should be linked to an online CPD log..
I should note that although the IFA logo appears on the passport, they are not endorsing this - I put it there only becuase they would be the best people to administer it (imho) however, it is a prototype ...
apart from being awed at the technology... would a passport such as this which you carry with you... be the way forward? -- protecting the employer from dodgy CVs and giving the confidence to the employee to show just what they can do... ??
matched to an online database, this would be part of the professionaling the profession :face-huh:

25 April 2007
IFA and EDI launch vocational qualification in archaeological practice
Aspiring archaeologists who are being trained informally can for the first time acquire vocationally relevant skills, thanks to a new qualification launched on the 25th April 2007.
The qualification in Archaeological Practice has been developed over three years by the Institute of Field Archaeologists (IFA) with the support of the Creative and Cultural Industries Sector Skills Council and Education Development International (EDI).
The award is offered at Levels 3 and 4, and provides a means of formally accrediting on-the-job training, as well as a nationally-recognised framework of skills in areas such as research, conservation and health and safety.
Kenneth Aitchison, Head of Professional Development at the IFA, said: "To be able to finally offer a recognised qualification to both professional and amateur archaeologists is a huge achievement. Many organisations have been involved in the development of the qualification and we hope that archaeologists across the UK will be able to benefit from its development."
EDI, who are launching the qualification at the Guildhall, London, will be offering the award at their heritage centres, and it will also be available from the IFA and new assessment centres. The Nautical Archaeology Society will be offering the syllabus as part of their training programme, and volunteer training projects and excavations such as Dig Manchester are pencilled in for the future.
"EDI [...] have the background, expertise and experience that have meshed perfectly with our requirements to deliver the qualification to professional archaeologists, students, and unpaid participants who want to be able to demonstrate their skills," said Mr Aitchison.
Gareth Phillips, Business Development Director of EDI, commented: "EDI are delighted to be the awarding body that has worked with the IFA to develop this qualification. Together we have created a qualification that the archaeology sector needs in order to further develop the skills of both the amateur and professional archaeologist."
BAJR asks... Quote:quote:available from the IFA and new assessment centres
Can someone actually tell us where these are?
