  Lost Roman Fort?
Posted by: BAJR Host - 6th May 2007, 11:05 AM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (19)

I received this message today from a good friend in Canada:

I would appreciate some wide views about what he should do.. rather than me just putting my own tuppence forward. (which I will as well.!)

Here is the post. and below is the image. many thanks

Quote:quote:I would like your opinion regarding my next trip to the UK. I'm a little lost and don't want to embarrass myself, or waste a boatload of my time on something daft. I have been sitting on this for over a year now, and feel that I have to do something or let it go.

One day many years ago, I came up with a little theory regarding the Roman military occupation of Lancashire, as is my wont, and I started to follow the data to see if the theory could be proved (everyone needs a hobby.) I ended up following a very long, hard trail of quite circumstantial clues, stringing together a load of disjointed information, and I ended up with a spot where I thought there would have to be something. I called up some aerial photographs of the spot and ended up very quickly with the attached photo.

As you can see, it is in the classic playing card shape, and is approximately 5 acres in size, the right size for a cavalry fort. It has rounded corners, which indicate a definite Roman possibility. I'm not saying it is, but it sure looks to me as if it could be...

Here's my question, how should I approach this? Forget about it? The trail was signposted with questionable science and littered with intuition. It is also quite contrary to current thought on the area. It would be very hard, due to the information being very disjointed, and the theory developing over the course of many years, but should I try to write a little report on the trail that I followed?

Any advise you could give would be most appreciated.

  Trainee not training
Posted by: trowelfodder - 5th May 2007, 11:32 AM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (8)

I know this is a thread ive raised a number of times but am really concerned about the use of the job title (and payrates) of trainees in archaeology. I have been working for a unit which employs trainees on a lower wage but when starting at the company we were given a big talk on the training package and commitment which all sounded great however nearly 5months on and no training has been given and on a recent occassion a trainee with very little machine watching experience was left on her own to watch 6 machines! If they are going to be used in this way (although no one should be in that situatuion in my opinion) then surely the term trainee is a joke!

Train them or pay them - its no good just having a scheme on paper to show if anyone questions you these things are serious issues and archaeologists starting out on their careers deserve far more.

I think its about time there was a big crack down and some naming of wayward units so at least new diggers are informed of thier chances of training when they join unitsSadSad

  subsistance payments
Posted by: trowelfodder - 5th May 2007, 11:25 AM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (32)

have recently finished working for a company that didnt pay sickpay for diggers (only office staff but thats a whole other issue) but when we were sick we had our subsistance money docked as well! Surely is adding insult to injury? Isnt the purpose of subs to give you money to live on and dont sick people need food too? Anyone know the legality of this?

  Archaeology work with the UN
Posted by: mooseplaster - 3rd May 2007, 12:51 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (7)

Some time ago I found an ad for work with the UN in Iraq, excavating mass graves... Due to outside pressures, I couldn't apply. I'd like to do it now, but can't find anything about it anywhere... I don't even know if it's still going on! Anyone know anything?

  how to be an arky

Hi y'all

This piece has appeared in today's Independant in the careers advice section.

I think not bad for what it is. Mentions low pay and general lack of training provisions, but the up sides too. Nice to see something relatively balanced for a change!

  Digging up your own past
Posted by: Paul Belford - 1st May 2007, 06:28 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (25)

One of my staff has been researching her family history for the last few months. She has just discovered that her great-great-uncle worked in an ironworks, a site that we excavated about three or four years ago. She worked on the excavation (obviously before realising that her ancestor had also worked on the site).

I found this quite amazing, and wondered if anyone else had excavated (or had heard about someone excavating) the home or workplace of one of their own ancestors?

  HELP!!!
Posted by: rachstebbs - 27th April 2007, 05:11 PM - Forum: The Site Hut - Replies (3)

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone can help with some references.

As some of you are probably aware I'm looking at the proximity of henges to rivers for my dissertation,(and the results from the GIS are blooming interesting let me tell you!)

I'm currently trying to find a paper or book that talks about the use of rivers as boundaries, and also something that talks about the use of monuments as markers in the lasdscape.

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated, and if you're interested in the results drop me a line and I can explain all about the thrilling conclusions I have come to!! (But not till after hand in on Tuesday!!)

Cheers

Rachel
