Ghost graves |

On some Roman cemeteries, cut graves have been seen to be empty and un-occupied.This does`nt appear to be an accident of survival as near neighbours seem to be in good states of preservation.By and large, they seem to be almost identical morphologically to "occupied" graves. So what are they? Plots bought/prepared and never used? repatriation of the dead to their native lands/families soon after death? Has anyone studied this phenomena? It has even been suggested that they may represent a warning of some sort..."this has your name on it sonny so behave" kind of thing. What do you think?:face-huh:

Jumping on the early Christmas band-waggon, what would most of you consider as ideal gifts for archaeologists. Is it new publications or subscription to the IFA, line level or plumb bob, trowel or new vis-vest?????? Would be interested in your ideas...

Unit liability for employment offers |

Where do diggers stand in situations where they have been told by a unit that there is work and that the unit is just waiting on a start date?
HAve just finished one job ready to start a new local job only to be informed by a former collegue who now works for said unit that the work had been delayed. I was then left without work and unable to sign on as i had voluntarily left my previous employment.
Have been hanging around waiting only to be informed that the job is no longer happening so I am left high and dry!! I am not the only person in this situation as I know of two others who have been waiting for this job only to exhaust the lat of their previuos jobs wages and have nothing left to tide them over.
How can a company take no responcability for this! Just an email apology saying will keep us on record if anything else comes up!
Have been in a similar situation before as many jobs are offered on the when they happen condition. How can a digger protect themselves beyond the trust no-one approach as units do not generally hand out contracts until you start work?
Any thoughts?

Laid off at Christmas? Advice needed.... |

It seems that Troll's anxiety about a lack of digging jobs may be partially lifted by recent adverts on BAJR....
However, in reading the small print of one ad I note that contracts are being offered that finish on the 22nd December. Whilst I am certain that the company concerned will renew contracts (as they seem fairly confident that they have work running through to the early Spring), it reminded me that when the subject of Winter/Christmas lay offs was last raised on the BAJR forum, our Host posted advice on the legal implications and maybe even offered a helpline?
As I can't seem to find that advice in the BAJR archive, I wondered David, if it might be timely to reissue it, incase anyone might need it?

Just out of curiosity... has anyone heard of the
Field Archaeologists Association (UK)
I can't seem to find anything about them.
