An event that some of you guys might be interested in:
Royal Holloway, University of London are holding a 'Life in the Ice Age' Event on the 24th June, from 10 - 4pm.
There will be loads of Ice Age themed activities and demonstrations of flint knapping with Time Team's Phil Harding, a talk on human origins by Professor Clive Gamble (as seen on the Discovery Channel), and much much more to try and do...hopefully resulting in more people being aware of the importance and potential of Ice Age sediments.
Everyone is welcome and admission is free.
For more details, please go to http://www.iceage.org.uk.

Heres a bit of early morning fun. I was wondering last night on the way home about an environmental sampling mystery. Id always heard differing accounts about if it does or does not, but if you smoke while collecting soil samples etc does the cigerette ash contaminate the sample to such an extent that it becomes unusable for any effective result? Im not really talking bulk samples here but more burnt material or that of a cremation etc. Obviously this is highly unproffesionaland and is always seen on site as a hanous crime but does it in reality cause any great problems for the final processing of the sample.

Where does the bajr stand on blanket compulsory drugs testing on archaeological sites?
Does a company have the right to sack you if you refuse?
Surely if not under the influence on site your outside interests should be your own

English Heritage payrise |

I dont know if anyone else has noticed the salary quoted for the English Heritage project archaeologist and supervisors posts currently being advertised on BAJR.
According to Outwage records the payrates have been increased by 8.5% and 8.2% respectively since the same posts were advertised almost exactly 12 months ago. (That is by £27 and £30 per week to £341 and £384 pw for those lacking calculators).
If the new English Heritage pay rates are intended as a benchmark for the profession, it is to be welcomed and sets a new aspiration for the archaeological 'dignity' wage.

Afternoon fellow archaeological types. I work as a consultant, hey shot me, and at the moment im trying to do a ES chapter for the cultural heritage receptors effecting the seting of monuments in an area to 3km that wind turbines may have an intervisabilty issue. How in the devils briefcase do you get it through to the thick sculls of developers that a 70m wind turbine is gona have a negative impact on the landscape wherever they put it!! I feel very frustrated at the moment and feel like with this sort of development I am just going through the ES motions. Because of the sustainablity issues involved with such projects the powers that be will grant aproval to build it anyway so why am I wasting my time and whats the point of having an intervisabilty issue when you just cant hide a 70m tall turbine.
Honestly I feel like Im taking the mountain to Mohammed only to find he`s already got one!!
AHH!!!!:face-confused:
